I have just been set free after serving 3 weeks punishment, my parents confined me to my room and my bedroom door was kept LOCKED with a key at all times, this is because I got caught shoplifting, I stole a small bottle of vodka so me and my friends could drink ( I am underage ) the shopkeeper called my parents and not the police, my parents said they don't want to see me go to jail so made my punishment as close to prison as possible I had to get up at 7am after a shower and breakfast I was locked back in my room for the rest of the day, I wasn't allowed ANY entertainment, NO tv NO phone etc, I was allowed 2 hours internet per day for good behavouir.
each day I had to write a 6 page essay, lights out and bed 9pm, it was a HORRIBLE punishment I was so so miserable I have lost 3 weeks of my school holiday.
my parents said a severe punishment is necessary to deter me from offending again
is this fair ?

WEll folks, she obviously has not learnt anything so the punishment has well and truly FAILED. If she had been made to apologize, pay back the shop owner through hard work, been shown either in real life or on line what drink can do to people and how small businesses are going under because of shoplifting then she may not have needed to come on here to moan!!

Auntlydia, is this wrong?
The possible consequences of being caught shoplifting are: You may end up being arrested and taken into custody. If you are convicted in court of shoplifting, you can be fined and/ or jailed for up to six months if the goods are worth less than £200; or for a maximum of seven years if they are worth more than £200.

I thought you would have realised by now that the answer from most people is a resounding 'NO'. Last time I advised you to use the time to improve your spelling. Learning about capital letters would do no harm either.
No. The more you protested the more your parents must have thought you'd not let it sink in yet. In fact, still seems that it hasn't, but there are limits on how much one can try to instill a good moral framework. Stop complaining, accept your punishment, and prove you did change your ways.
I tend to agree jb. But you never know.
There is something very troubling here.
I followed the previous thread and it's obvious this person still hasn't got the message; no contrition, just the continuing complaint about the punishment. To wit, how dare they?
This seems to be the current mind-set of a large portion of society (and I use that term guardedly), not just millennials or later arrivals.
These people are totally self-centred. The concept that their actions might affect others is not a concern, in fact not even considered.
It's not Ego, it's Id. Civilization is regressing rapidly.

What else is worrying? Enablers like AL. We now are seeing the result with much more serious matters.
like I said you just want sympathy which you aren't going to get .not once have you shown any remorse for your crime ,yes crime of theft, grow up .how many times have you shop lifted without being caught ?
unless you'd secreted some in your bedroom, three weeks without vodka seems a little harsh to me

Worth studying. Encouraged by AZardoz's post.

So becky........do you think that you needed punishment?

If no, then we can stop right here.
If yes, then what would you suggest would be the appropriate penalty?

a) Physical punishment?
b) Psychological reasoning?
c) Confinement?
d) The "naughty step".......don't ask, I have no idea?

I am all for physical punishment, but that has gone out of fashion.....a good thrashing with the strap or belt. Apparently it causes or exacerbates a more violent society.

Psychology leaves me cold, so all we have left is the removal of one's liberties.
Yes, you parents were quite correct, although a little OTT and yes........it was fair.

I'm a bit uncomfortable about the bedroom being locked , . 3 weeks seemed a long time. But I'm not your parent .
No, IMO it was not too harsh if it makes you think twice about doing it again.

If this is real then you are still trying to get people to say that you have been harshly treated. You have not acknowledged that you are, essentially, a thief and have broken the law (how many times I have to wonder). You arehelping to make the prices of goods higher for ordinary people so you are stealing from them too and you continue to whinge on about 'poor' you. If you have reached this age without any form of personal morality then I feel that you future will not be great. Perhaps your parents have not done a good enough job with you up to now.
Vulcan do you understand that this is a child? The link you gave is for adult sentencing not juvenile. Try googling 'shoplifting and juvenile crime BBC' its an interesting article.

Bigbecky claims to be 14. She's not a child and should know right from wrong.
Just thinking - if I had done this my mother would have beaten me into the middle of next week.
