I have recently been told by an BT Openreaach Engineer that the fault on my phone was created because spiders had bitten through the wire on the telegraph pole outside my house. Should I really believe this?. Believe me this incident took a month to get a result ! Anyone know what sort of spider I should be looking out for?

A spider that wants to be part of the world wide web
Rats occasionally chew through wire but anything smaller would be fantasy.
Elephants can chew through phone wires when you want a trunk call:-)
Tee-hee, very funny carrust.
It's ok if those elephants got in. You can always reverse the charge.
Please let me know where you live, so I can stay well away

Thank you for some brilliant answers, but this is a serious query. I was amazed and totally disbelieve it , but is there the slightest chink of truth or is the engineer as thick as the telegraph pole?
I don't know, but I can't believe any spider in Britain has big enough jaws to bite through wires.
I honestly hope there isn't any spider in Britain has big enough jaws to bite through wires!!!

I don't think there is, you'd think if they could bite through telephone wires then it's be known about they could bit through other similar things!
The bizarre thing is that I lived in Egypt and was very scared as a child when a huge sturdy spider came under the toilet door when I was in there. I can remember it to this day. Reading that these are native to Egypt makes sense as it fits with what I saw!
If spiders could eat through wires/cables they could give you a real nasty bite. This reminds me of an electrician at work who, when asked what was wrong with the machine he said it was the foo foo valve. Translated to I haven't a clue.
Jeza great - fou fou valve I will remember that.

Doctor - what is wrog with my poor baby
his fou-fou valve is leaking Mum, but dont worry ....

I thought earing Cu was a long shot - it is toxic in decent quantities.

As for Egypt - I cant go to the bog now, ever since a snake came out of one.... no a real one. sand viper or something.
Its like when you take your car to a garage and ask the mechanic what the fault was and he says it was your "crunion block!"
A spider with teeth!!!?
a very big one!!!!
