One question: how old is your son?
If your son is of school age, look for local museums/community centres etc.  They usually have workshops or activities, either free or not expensive.

He is six, going on 60!
Swimming, you can normally pay for 2 people for under a fiver and its great exercise, other than that, maybe a day out cycling - weather permitting.

A walk along a beach looking for interesting shells.... a flask of warm tea/soup for after ...nice brisk day......get the air into ur lungs....

A trip to the zoo and buy some souvenirs Tshirt etc....

If its rainy let him help u bake a cake and eat it for tea. ....get some glossies and cut out some stuff with him and make a collage....(safety kids scissors) and glue .Put on some lively music and dance around the room with him....clap ur hands to the beat......

I sometimes find with my son that he is happy to "chill out" for awhile, I sometimes think (I do not want to upset anyone by saying this it is ny view only) that because we do not spend alot of time with our children that when we get time with them it has to be intense and always on the go, sit and read a book together or watch a video, children need to relax just as much as adults, Give them the option if you are not sure e.g: We can go to :1.swimming 2. Walk 3.stay at home and watch tv and read. do not automatically persume kids need to be on the go and entertained they are told what to do at school let them chil out for abit in the holidays...

Well we have just sent our back to school after their 2 week half term in Scotland and we just let them chill the entire time.

They were out playing every day, weather permitting, with their mates ....... tearing round the park on bikes and roller blades ..... and didnt get to bed until at least 10.30pm.

Did them the world of good to just blow all the school cobwebs out the window and now they are back at school recharged and ready to learn.

Mine are 10yrs, 9yrs and 4yrs btw.
