Hastings, a sleepy coastal town, has had more ASBOS given out than anywhere else in the country. 9 ASBOS per 100,000 people were issued in 2005 compared with the national average of 7.65. Also 29 Acceptable Behaviour Agreements (ABA) were given in an effort to stop ASBOS from being needed. Hastings officials claim that the ASBOS and ABAs 'cannot fail'.

Do you think that ASBOS are working as a way of stopped anti-social behaviour? What is the cause behind anti-social behaviour?

Didn't seem to work terribly well for the kid who lives 2 doors up from me, who's just been sent to a secure unit for 5 months. Was very fond of stealing stuff, setting fire to various things, and riding on stolen motorbikes up the main road without a crash helmet. He'd been through the tag, curfew and ASBO route.
Very easy to blame his family, as Dad is in jail for assault, as is older brother. His Mum spends nearly all day drinking, smoking and swearing like a trooper . Why Social Services didn't remove him from this situation earlier is difficult to say.
By the way, he is twelve years of age.
ASBOs would probably be more effective if they were strictly enforced. Instead we have delinquents committing crimes when they should be under curfew.
What is the cause for antisocial behaviour? Probably many things, the home, environment, aggressive advertising, disruptive communication, no discipline in schools, no national service, and many other variables. Why is the most disorder in the richest countries in the world? Freedom or free to do your own thing more likely!
the cause ??

poor policing.

poor parenting.

poor government.

lack of respect.

DRUGS.

BOOZE.

giving crime a fun name doesnt help either. "asbos, joy riding, twocs.... there are lots of reasons, but i blame the government. its policies are out of date.
its imigration rules are laughable.
the distribution of monies to just about anyone that takes time to learn the ways of fiddling the dss.....

i was gonna say that Britain is a nation that has been taught to fight for what it wants, but the thieving to$$ers of the 21st century are nothing like the men of years gone by.

i hate Britain and all that it has become.
Anti-social behaviour is nothing new - I remember all the stories of "joy riding louts" from 15 years ago when Oxford was dubbed the "City of Screaming Tyres"

Everybody blamed the Government then too.

Wonderful meaningless statistic by the way 9 as opposed to 7.65???

Hastings only has a popultation of 85,000 so that'd be a total of 7.65 ASBO's would it?

I smell the distict odor of "Trash journalism" here!

Do away with Asbos and bring back fitting punishment. Thats the answer.
They should re-name them ASBOLLS ......as in Absolute Bo!!ocks....Stick these chavvy, council estate scumbags in the Army for 5 years

The main cause behind this has got to be the parents, but they are probably just as bad as the kids so there`s not much hope in the future

I agree with funkymoped about this country and what it`s become...and I can`t see it getting any better
You are right Elvis, bring back national service! That way even the ones whose parents haven't taught them it will learn discipline and basic respect.

I have to say, I don't think ASBSOs do what they are meant to do. As far as I can see the Chav scumbags around here think they are some kind of medal.
But Kat when this was suggested, the Services said they didn't want the scum - they want proper law-abiding decent young people and who can blame them.
I wonder who actually produced these figures. They would be more meaningful if they included the number of re-offenders. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think of Hastings more as a problem place than a sleepy coastal town - why else all the ASBOs?
Asbo sounds like my cat's name,Aspro
