smoking infront of children

I find it absolutly shocking that i still see adults smoking infront of there children when there in the same room as them, we all know how stupid this is, so whu do people still do it? Not only is it bad for your health but it also stinks, i thinks theres nothing worse than a child inhaling stinking of smoke.
my son was invited to a birthday party up his best friends house and his mother answered the door with a fag in her gob, she invited me into the kitchen where there were several more people smoking in there, there was even a baby in her high chair amonst all this! Not only this but the house was filthy and absolutley stank of damp dog and stale smoke, least to say i did not want my kids in there and made an excuse to go saying the baby has got the runs and i dint want her to pass it on to anyone.
I feel so bad for his friend, he and my boy are so close and i hated having to take him away from his party but felt i had no choice, not only that but if my partner had seen that he wouldve gone nuts, theres no way he would allow the kids to be there when its like that. RANT OVER LOL

We all do things that could be dangerous ,Dr Filth, but smoking in the vicinity of kids is just plain selfishand blatantly stupid. Smoking is purely for our own pleasure. Driving kids to school is no comparison. Drinking in front of kids does not harm them, unless it leads to aggressive behaviour and drunkenness. I think it's a poor excuse from smokers who just aren't able to admit that their own pleasure comes above their kids' welfare. I have no problem with people smoking unless they cause problems to others. It is wonderful to go out socially these days and not come home with streaming red eyes and smelling of stale tobacco smoke.

And personally I wouldn't speed if I had passengers in my car. I have been a speedy driver in my time, and admit it, but nowadays I am more thoughtful about others on the road.

I am no saint and neither am I boring or self-righteous.

zzxxee, Both my father in law and father were heavy smokers for much of their lives. They both covered their food in loads of salt as they couldn't taste it properly!!

Incidentally, smoking contributed to both of their premature deaths, which meant our families suffered so much.

tameside hospital has ( like others) had to employ security to protect them from drunks

Dr. Filth.....so what? They are both big problems, alcohol abuse is well recognized and the Government is trying to do something about it.

Do you suggest that we do nothing for either problems?

Yes Dr Filth, I did mention drunks and aggressive behaviour. Just as bad as smoking. It may well have split loads of families up. Noone has suggested that cigarettes split families up, just that it might at the very least affect their families health or lead to death.

There is no excuse for smoking in the presence of others in my opinion. If you want to smoke that's fine, but I don't want to be compomised by it.

The headmistress at my sons school had to send a reminder to parents and carers collecting children from school asking them not to smoke in the playground. Now they all hang about in a group at the school gate and all the children have to pass through the smokescreen as they leave.

I'm not a smoker, but surely they can refrain for the few minutes it takes to collect their child from school? Makes you wonder what some of these kids live in.

one thing i hate though and have decided on principal is to become a preaching type of redormed smoker
i will not look down on anyone who chosses to smoke nor pass judgement on them
what people do in their own homes is up to them
but i will not compramise my health or the health of children by thoughtless people

Agree Dr Filth in many respects. I don't want to preach to smokers either. What they do is up to them, but please, please respect the non smokers.

Annie, such a regular sight outside schools these days - the gaggle of smoking Mums, usually with their babies and todlers waiting with them in the middle of all the smoke. Thoughtless.

Our 'nutty' neighbours next door both smoke like chimneys & have 3 young sons. They think nothing of sitting on the patio (when the trampoline's not on it) & puff away, not realising that their cigarette smoke is coming through/over our fence, stinking us out!

We either have to leave the patio table on which we're eating from & go to the end of the garden to sit at another smaller table or bench to eat - or go back inside the house.

Why can't they sit at the bottom of 'their' garden to smoke - away from us & their kids instead?!

reading some of the posts makes me laugh.
itchy when he comes up to see me always has a drink of coffee.i can't stand coffee it makes me feel sick but i make him one because he would rather have a coffee than tea. i wash his mug and the spoon seperate from mine .last time i was in manchester town centre i walked past one of these new coffee bars and i nearly puked.
so i can understand the people who hate the smokers

I don't think the fact that coffee makes you feel sick will actually lead to a decline in your health. Bananas do much the same for me, but they won't lead to my demise (unless I slide on a banana skin and kill myself)!!
