Someone's tried to get money from my account.

Hi... I went to the Barclays cash machine in Gandía and tried to withdraw 150 euros. The machine spat my card out and told me to consult my bank. When I got home, I tried to log on to my online banking and that wouldn't allow me access either. After a long conversation with Barclays, they've informed me that someone has tried to debit £823 from my account. I only use the card to get cash out, and never to make purchases or pay for meals, diesel, etc. The lady reckoned they got my details from the internet, but the only sites I've used recently are Miss Groovy and Easyjet. Could it be because I've logged onto my Barclays account using Internet Explorer?

Have you logged into your online account via a link in an email? That is one way these people get your details.

No... I go to Barclays Online Banking and log in from there.
Have the bank suggested anyway/anything you can do to get the money back,or even trace exactly where it went.Maybe somewhere you used it have made a mistake? You never know

Well they blocked the transaction, thankfully, but cancelled my card to be on the safe side. I've definitely only used the card for cash withdrawals, booking a flight and buying some tape stuff for my mother to bring over for me.
It isn't likely to be an issue with IE unless you haven't been doing your windows update regularly. I only ever use IE to access my online account and have never had any problems. You could try doing a virus and spyware scan incase you have picked up a key logger virus.
The ATM outside the bank I regularly use was recently fitted with a tiny camera to capture users PIN and a device to read the info on their cards. That's one way they might have got your details.
I now use ATM's inside the bank.
Do you use good up to date anti-virus?

There are plenty of pieces of malware out there that'll steal your account details.

If that's the case and you're logging into your bank account from it you secure the pc and change your pass code pronto.

But it doesn't take a moment for someone to swipe your card and get the details.
Someone must have been able to gain access to your PIN No NoMercy, but thankfully if you have now had old card cancelled and new one issued you would probably get a new PIN to go with it for security reasons.
Nom what a good job you found out, I have found Barclays quite good like that, I used to have a Barclaycard and they rang me up when there was unusual activity (that wasn't me) on my account. I got my money back. Is yours OK?

My updates are done frequently, but I will do a scan. Thanks Daffy.

I did read somewhere that there was a problem with Internet Explorer.

I've got AVG anti virus, etc.

Of course I have another problem now. They've cancelled that card and the new one will go to my Nan's house in Hereford. I'm in Spain until at least the end of May, so I have to ring back after half 5 and get them to transfer money to an account over here, otherwise I'm in the Merde.
I use IE8 but I doubt if it is your Browser that has caused the problem. You must have accessed an unsafe site, one without the little Padlock in browser Bar.
There apparently was a security issue with IE, which MS admitted, but that was a few versions ago. MS say IE is now completely secure......I use it for my banking and have never had problems (touch wood)

I've just had a thought... I had to use a site to purchase top up for my English mobile so I could receive calls abroad. But that was a couple of months ago... Other than that, it was just Easyjet and Miss Groovy.
I work in computer security and no browser is completely secure.

There are always vulnerabilities that are found and exploited before they can be fixed - there as many that I see for firefox as IE. The little padlock can be faked too

Best you can do is keep updated regularly (2nd Tuesday of the Month is MS's big release day) and have good AV regularly up to date.

And use a reliable bank - I know one that will be nameless - asked a friend of mine to pay for a fraudulent credit card item before they'd discuss whether or not to refund the money!!!

Sounds like Barclays is switched on I like HSBC's security. Santander (Abbey) are using a system where you get texted a code to enter when you want to make a payment from e-banking
crafty's touching wood ha ha ha ha

sorry NM that just made me giggle - can't your gran post your card to you?
That site was probably the dodgy one NoMercy, who knows. You have to be extremely careful with your Bank details as there are some bad buggers out there.

Fluffy... Tony's mate from Birmingham is flying out here in about 3 weeks, so I could get my Nan to post all my Barclays stuff by registered post to him, then he can bring it with him. Safer than posting it all the way here I reckon.

The site I used to buy Vodaphone was top ups 24/7 or something like that...
Barclays have branches in Spain, go and ask them for your card.
