i work in a finance company and i was under the impression that i cant tell people the balances of their credit on equifax, however, my employer expects me to. Am i right in believing this is wrong and they should apply for the information if they want it?

Bit of a grey area - after all, it is actually thier information. Strictly speaking, you should probably not give that information - however, you will also be a bit of a "computer says no" person.

There are certain things that we have talked through with a customer as they are public inforamtion as well.

For example, I will say to a customer " I need a satisfaction note for your CCJ" and proceed to give him the amount and court details.

If I wanted to be a "computer says no" person, I could tell him that he needed to apply to the register blah blah blah.

So, to answer your question, you should probably not divulge the information. If you live in the 'real' world and hate the pedantic jobsworth type people, then, I would suggest that you use your common sense.
