Well you do earn wages in prison. Not much, but enough to buy drugs and things.

Your debts (if they haven't been written off) will be waiting for you when you get out.

If you go inside for drug dealing or living off imoral earnings and the like all your assets are seized and any money in bank accounts is frozen and becomes crown property. Your debts on the other hand remain with you only when you come out you've even less means of paying them off. The moral ofcourse is try not to get banged up. If you happen to be a drug dealer, inject yourself with a lethal dose of heroin and save the tax payer the expense of keeping you in prison. At least then your assets would pay for something useful - like your funeral!

Surely our ever-helpful government has some sort of scheme for paying off convicted prisioner's debts? If not, I think they ought to.

Doesn't having these debts hanging over them whilst in prision constitute cruel or unusual punishment? It must be a terrible physcological burden that could scar them for years afterwards.

the company I used to work for always asked for an official document showing debtor was in prison then the account was put on hold.
