Hi I have fallen short in National Ins Contributions for 2003/2004. I have written to the Tax Office, because I could not understand why. I have now come to the conclusion that I was out of employment for around 6-7 months and I did not sign on, so no tax was being paid. Its for around 230 I understand its not a bill but need to make this short fall up so it counts towards my stste pension. Has anyone else had this? and how did they go about paying the money and what would happen if I dont pay it? Thankyou

If you don't pay it, you will have a period of your working life that doesn't count towards your state pension. Whether it matters depends on how much more you miss - on its own it will make no difference, but if you miss several years your state pension will be reduced.

If you had signed on you would have been credited with contributions.

if u r a female and u where at home with a child at any point, during the six months i think u need to contact the tax office, as i had to fill in a form about it??
