Why is the word AMBULANCE reversed on well on ambulances? At first I thought the idea was that they be identifiable from helicopters, but that's not right either, when you think about the way the letters are reversed.

Thanks in advance, for now! More personal thanks next week.

maybe if your in a car in front looking thru your rear view mirror?

It's so drivers can read it through thier mirrors, I think. But the flashing lights and sirens would (I hope) tell most people that there's a big white van in a hurry.. Move!

Allthough. The Police have that written the correct way round on the front of thier vehicles.... Why's that then?

stevie's right: it's for seeing it correctly in your rear-view mirror if you're in front of it. though as mudman says, it's only really for non-energencies; i guess just so you know it's there, and not a random van.
And heres the description of the rules for the NHS ambulance livery details; http://www.nhsidentity.nhs.uk/faq.htm#independentambulanceproviders (note to self..get out more...)
A while ago I had a motorcycle following me with Ahamay on the front of it, I thought I've not heard of those before, then the penny dropped!
Not a driver then?

Of course, in Wales, we see SNALWBMA on the front....

(Taksi for brachiopod.....I'll get me coat....)

Can't decide whether to think of y'all as brilliant or myself as a bit slow... Granted, I'm a pedestrian, but you'd think that if I take helicopters into the calculation, I might consider cars as well... Oh well. Thanks!!
Tourman, are sure that motorcyle wasn't a ahamaY ? :-)
