I accidentally wrote a cheque in pencil. It is to a
reputable company so I don't have a problem
with that but will the bank honour it ?

Doubtful
I wouldn't think so but there are rules regarding cheques, I am sure someone will enlighten you.

If I had brains I'd be dangerous !
Presumably you didn't notice at the time so I'm not sure how you know now. I'm surprised the company accepted it and tried to bank it. But if it was read by a machine when paid in I don't see there being a problem
We all make mistakes Interele, don't knock yourself.
Rip it up and write another one, in pen.
I think banks prefer it if you write cheques using blood.
The cheques are checked by a macine but still must be scrutinized as a cheque my wife wrote was returned as she used her maiden name.

I popped it in the post this morning. How I realised I'd done
it in pencil is a long story. I'll call the company on Monday
and pay by CC and get them to rip up the cheque. It's a
local company so that shouldn't be a problem.

Duh !
Interele,
That is the sort of thing I would do so don't worry.
Worry when you start going out with your clothes on!!
I think Gav means 'without' your clothes on.
The banks would prefer it if they could stop you writing cheques at all. Too convenient for the customer to be bothered with.

Must be a decent chance that the teller won't even notice.
^ or without
Doh!!
:-)

um I think he might have posted it already TBH
well someone wrote a cheque on a cow twenty years ago
but did warn the bank manager

and the impermanence question ( they sent the cow back after um cashing it) did come up

and the bank mgr said something like I was satisfied there was a clear intention to pay ....

I once filled in my Tax Return in pencil - they returned it !
