Have more to add re these - as you know I lost my debit card and was reimbursed with a new one maybe 2 weeks ago. Of course I have bought many things with the new card and always entered my new pin number - fine- just a half an hour ago I called to a butchers bought meat and he handed me payment slip - but I said but I haven't entered my pin number - no he said it was contactless.

Now I didn't enjoy my tea there - gulped it down- I never wanted contactless never - what happened there - would it help to go to Santander tomorrow and explain that I want my card to be "pinned". Thanks for any answer.

If you really can't get along with it, I think they will have to cancel and issue one without the 'contactless' facility.

See what they say tomorrow.
I remember reading somewhere that Santander is one of the Banks where you can request a card without the facility. It can only be used a fixed number of times before a transaction using the PIN must take place to prevent any large fraud.

I know mamy you wouldn't know the answer - why did they give me contactless when I didn't ask for one
They do so automatically but shouldn't if you specified that in your request - bad practice.

Ubasses - a little confused re your post - but sometimes I do a "big shop" of maybe £150 now and again - I would *** the knickers if I didn't do my pin.

Now Mamy would they have to cancel this card and send another bloody one.
contactless cards are fine, they have to be very close to the receiver to work and the chances of the signal being picked up are very low. However, the one to avoid are those i-Phone payment systems, those really can be dropped into by people sitting or standing nearby.......
They are issuing all new/replacement cards as contactless, you have to opt out. I never give the retailer a chance, I just shove my card into the machine before they can ask.
You can't use contactless for large purchases like that JJ.
Don't worry about large purchases, the maximum on contactless is £30 and as I said there is a limit on the number you can make without using a PIN. Can't remember if it is 4 or 5.
Question Author
ubasses that would be good shoving the card but unfortunately the independent butcher and many others have their machines at the back of the shop etc.
Did you let go of your card in the Butchers? Did he have a card reader on the counter?

I can't be a%sed waiting for another card to arrive and another new pin number - what I will try and remember is immediately when I purchase something independently ie butchers, vegetables shops - can I say oh by the way I want to use my pin. Could I get away with that
Yes.
the limit is £30 though many retailers still haven't had the upgrade and, for them, it's 20. Ubasses is correct, you can opt to put the card in the terminal and use your pin.
I don't use mine very often but last night it was declined. When I entered my PIN it was fine. I was a bit miffed because it came up 'declined' rather than just asking me for the PIN. It's a bit embarrassing to be told that in front of a queue.
Question Author
yes mamy I did let the card go and often have before bloody contactless came out.
Question Author
Ubasses I know you say oh £30 here and there - can only be taken out - I don't want £30 out of my account for I have worked so hard for that money.
Never let go of mine - they bring the machine to me.
You should never let your card out of your sight. Your butcher may be honest but many people aren't. This is especially the case when in a restaurant.
