Oh dear four such incidents in the past few weeks, I wonder if these cash machines will soon become a thing of the past?

Years ago we had Cigarette machines, Chocolate Machines, Gum machines, Stamp machines and Paraffin machines, and no body thought of ripping them from their positions.

I remember the gum machines. If the arrow pointed towards you you got an extra packet free.

That's true I forgot about that.

Did they contain thousands of pounds? (or the equivalent for their time?)

I don't think so

Cigarette machines probably had the most potential and they were attacked
As were phone boxes (remember them?)
There has been a spate of these crimes in Leicestershire recently, the local paper website (Leicester Mercury) reports them regularly.
I remember those cigarette machines, AG, on the wall just outside the shops where you, not us as kids of course:), could buy five Woodbines for I forget how much. However, paraffin machines?
In 1964 five Woodbines were 10d. I should know!
^
Yes. Usually outside the Hardware store.

Of course, all these machines were needed because in the 'good old days' none of the blinking shops stayed open past 5.00pm or at weekends LOL
I recall the nearby Cigarette machine being vandalised - the shopkeeper emptied it and put a sign on saying 'You've had the lot'.

The gang in the OP look scarily organised.
But why did people need to buy paraffin?
For lamps or heaters Stuey.
Thanks, Mamy.
In the days before central heating became widespread a lot of people had paraffin heaters in their homes. The coal fire only heated the living room. Google Esso Blue and Esso Pink.
^
indeed

to take the edge off the cold in our damp and unheated home and to light and prevent the pipes freezing in the outside toilet
^ Ahh, but life was so much better back then...
We had a paraffin heater in the outside lavvy to stop the water freezing.
I loved the little Tilly Lamp in our outside loo - was the only thing that made going bearable.
We may have been freezing cold but at least we didn't have to worry about 'brazen thieves' ripping atms out of supermarket walls

because we didn't have atms - or supermarkets!

:-)
This is in Geordie dialect so may be a bit difficult for some to follow:

Very difficult to rob the bank, too, back in the day. They weren't open long enough to do a proper job. 9.30 til 3.30, my local branch
You're quite right, nobody bothered stealing from vending machines. There were great trains to be robbed instead.
