Hi everyone,

I am 21 years old and started a new job in April. Originally, I was part-time but having finished my studies, I became full-time. I am on the same wage as another girl, but it seems that every month, I am getting slightly less than her. I am getting taxed more than her. Why could this be? We work the same hours and do the exact same work. How do I know I am on the correct tax code? Any help will be much appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi, the tax rules are very complex. I would take  some wage advices to your local tax ofice and they will be happy to assist you

The basic tax code, if you have no benefits from your employer or anything else is 489L for 2005/06.

They could have started taking student loan early?

As yummy said its probably best to ring the tax office to confirm the code you are on.

The other girl may have overpaid tax in the previous yr and be getting it back through a reduced code, or if she hasn't worked the full year from April she will pay less tax.
