Some 10p coins have ever so slightly different widths from others - so how do they all get recognised in vending machines?

Vending machines recognise coins by weight so i assume the ridge is bigger and the inside is then slimmer
I'm sure I read somewhere before that some vending machines use nickel magnets to check for certain coins also.
