Does anyone know if there is any agreements in place with the Inland Revenue for personal allowances for people working in the airport industry? There is an agreement with the engineering industry for 200 for tools, protective clothing etc.

surely the employer should provide all necessary protective clothing, tools, etc to do the job?

Yes, but not in the case of airport staff, you are supplied with uniforms etc, but you have to clean them yourself. The point is that if there is an agreement in place for that industry, everyone working in that industry can claim the allowance and even if it is only 200 for instance, I would rather have it that give it Gordon!
If you're in a union, your union rep should know.  If there isn't an amount already agreed I'm fairly sure you can still claim on an individual basis.  I don't know the precise procedures but your local tax office should tell you or, out of office hours, their Helpline on 0845 9 000444 (open evenings and weekends - calls are charged at local rates).
