I have some savings but not enough to see me me into my retirement

I think it depends on how badly you want to save. I save very easily because I don't mind cutting back. My mum on the other hand says she wants to try and save but she can't.. it doesn't help that she's always spending!

Bella - having trouble working you out. From your use of language I get the feeling that you are a certain age and then from things that you have said I think you are a different age altogether. You also seem to lurk and wait for people (you waited for me to answer one of your posts and then didn't acknowledge me).

I am not questioning what Erin pays. It is reasonable and an adult can be supported for £50.00 per week for say food and share of household bills, but it wouldn't cover any rent and I think it is a good idea to charge an amount for pure 'rent'. However, if the offspring is saving perhaps to get a home of their own or for a deposit on rental, then I think £50.00 would be fair to give them a chance to save.

At least Erin contributes, a lot of parents quite happily don't charge their kids anything at all.

jno jnr paid zero (for room and food) when he came back from uni, because he was saving for a place of his own. If we'd charged him he would only have had to stay longer. He now has his own flat (but is renting it out and has moved in with his gf). It's worked out well for all concerned.

I have done the opposite of Nox - been an employee for one company for yonks, retired early with a good pension, invested everything very conventionally. Different strokes.

As long as the financial set up works for erin and her mom thats all that matters. I dont think she deserves a hard time or to be told to leave home because they dont agree with it.

Life takes all of us in different directions. I don't think you can predict. You can plan as much as you like and then something unexpected happens and your plans have to go by the wayside. It happened to us about 20 years ago, but we will survive in our retirement because we are resourceful - we have had to be. Fortunately too I have an inheritance which will help.
