I have seperated after a long and stormy relationship.

Should i just go out and have some fun now for a while?, after all i do need some and i am an adult fast approaching mid life, or should i wait, be a good girl and hold out for "the one" ?

Up to you, its all very well having fun (using protection) but some people do that for a while and get bored. I have a friend that gets very lonely and goes out and sleeps with men and has arrangements she says at the time shes fine about it and is having fun but when the arrangement all breaks down she gets upset and feels like shes nothing. It can be fun at the time but really what does it achieve, it can make you feel very worthless afterwards.
Dont go out with the intention of either.

Things will just happen naturally
This is what gives us girls a bad name I feel. One night stands never turn out to be a good thing, you always end up feeling worthless as the bloke tells you it was a 'mistake' and not to mention it to anyone and the blokes girlfriend loses out too.
why does needing some fun have to be sex
I would say go and have some of the "fun" you are looking for! So long as you play it safe and don't take it too seriously!
finding "the one" might take a while so live a little first!
Well you could get the out dated notion of 'the one' out of your head for a start, this isn't hollywood! Just go out with your friends and enjoy yourself and take each experience as it comes. Don't make a point of planning either way.
