Not looking at going anytime soon but my son really wants to go. I went as a teenager and really enjoyed it.
Can any ABers recommend where to go? We all like sight seeing but my son especially likes to learn...me and dad like all that stuff but also like to chill :-)
It`s years since I went to Germany but I used to be there a lot with work. I`m sure it has changed a lot since I went. Berlin is the obvious choice. I used to like some of the off the beaten track cities (then, anyway) When I went to Leipzig, it was in the East. I remember going to Colditz from there which is well worth a visit. Breman and Stuttgart where nice in the autumn, Munich in the winter (christmas markets etc) Dusseldorf was brilliant for a good night out (lots of bars). Hamburg is good in the summer as it`s on a river. My cousin lives there but to be honest, I never saw much of it in the day as days were usually spent recovering from the all-nighters that we had in the local bars. Nice city though.
Try the Rhein in Flames river cruises. I think they end up in Trier, which is a lovely mediaeval type town with a modern area too. Plus it is on the doorstep to Luxembourg.
You probably know that Mr S is German and I 've lived and worked there. Düsseldorf is nice.Loads of bars, restaurants and great shopping. The old town is lovely ,same with Cologne ,the old town and the Cathedral and loads of museums and galleries .A Rhine cruise is great for seeing stuff. Nice one from Düsseldorf to Rüdesheim.Stops off at lots of lovely old towns where you can overnight if you want to and of course the scenery is superb, castles, vineyards, the Lorelei etc.
Berlin's full of museums and galleries if that's the sort of thing your boy likes. Good public transport, lots of parks and countryside to relax in, good food (not all sausages and sauerkraut), good shops and department stores, still some bits of the Berlin wall to see. When I was there last year prices seemed broadly similar to the UK. Keep an eye on sites like Travelzoo for special offers.
Plan your own tour route on the amazing Deutsche Bahn railways. If you like to chill try a spa, here's a list of them:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_spa_towns_in_Germany
