Does She Have To Work Xmas Day?

Eldest granddaughter works it the care sector, she has been told by her boss she must work on Christmas day.

She lives about 12 miles from the job and normally gets the bus as she does not drive, but none are running on that day as you would expect.

She has told him she cannot get there and he has told her that's not his problem if she doesn't make it in she will be in trouble.

How does she stand on this? Must she work? Does he expect her to walk 12 miles in & 12 miles back?

She's happy to work but is getting upset about this.

Does she have a contract of employment? How long ago was this brought up and what is his solution if any to her dilemma?
I hate to say it, but it really isn't the responsibility of her boss to figure out how she gets to work.

Is there anyone that could give her a lift? Maybe a co-worker doing the same shift?
Surely she must have known a little while ago that she would be rostered to work on Christmas day so that she could have made provision to be able to get to work on the day.
Tell her to claim for taxi fare, that is a really uncaring attitude, horrible man!

Unfortunately for her, the boss doesn't need a solution to it. It's her problem how she gets there, not his. Can she get a taxi?

She would have to work if asked. Can she not get a taxi and ask them to reimburse her (tell them first) or maybe have a chat with someone else working that day to pick her up? Its a shame that they put so much pressure on staff - I'm so glad i am not working now.
I was just wondering if he has made it to the dizzying heights of being a boss he may have some ideas - maybe I have too much faith in people and would make a crap boss.

Hi Mamy, yes she does have a contract of employment, it was brought up a few days ago (so probably a weeks notice) He does not offer any solutions unfortunately.
Patients need care, even on christmas day. Its your g'dters chosen profession & you can take her or she can get a taxi - IF she wants to keep her job.

Short notice it is I agree - to keep my job I would use Taxis if no family member free for a lift.
I have worked many a Christmas and New Year days. Some places organised a mini bus to get us all to and from work.

It was great, but as I was the furthest away I was the last to be dropped of. So I tended to get home about 2 hours after my shift finished!

Is her boss also at work Christmas day ( bet he's not ) if he is could he not pick her up and take her into work.

She has suggested she get a cab but he said they will not pay for it.

To be honest, I don't think they should pay for her taxi. They don't pay for transport any other day of the year, so why on Christmas day?

I am sure they won't, she will have to stand the cost - I realise she will be out of pocket that day but needs must. Is there truly no one free for at least one leg of the journey?
Hope she is getting at least double time ( wages ) for having to work on Christmas day.
her family are upset at g'dter working xmas. If its the terms of work dont be grumpy about it; especially in such sensitive jobs.
