you should pay the money, but no one can make you. the seller will then leave you negative feedback, and I think they can file a report to Ebay. not sure what can happen after that.

you could try apologising the the seller and explaining your mistake, but they will have to pay fees for the "sale".
I agree with sara about contacting the seller and apologising, they may drop the sale and re-list the item. You can always ask ebay a question about this : Home > Help > Bidding & buying > Resolving buying problem. On the right hand side there is a contact link. You will need the item number which is usually on the right hand side of the page where you have the description. Sorry usually helps though, if your seller is understanding, it is one of those things. Just don't press the button again unless you want to buy ! You don't want to get negative feedback.

thanks for brill info
I dont really understand how you can bid for an item you dont want. You place a bid and then it asks you to confirm your bid.....Like the other have said your only option at the moment is to contact the seller and explain that you are new to e-bay and make a mistake. Hope that the bidder is an understanding sort, which in my experience most of them are.

Good luck
i think many newbies bid on the first item they see...then discover a cheaper one, so try to retract their bid...or end up buying both, and want their money back for one...because as has been stated you are asked to confirm your bid twice so i dont see how you can have done it accidentally

anyway, id just ask nicely...perhaps offer to pay their relisitng fees? they wont be much
Explain your position but do it quickly. The longer you leave it you may get reported for non-paying then eBay give you a black mark and they can suspend your membership, so just be honest. Just say you made a mistake - but I don't understand how you bid - as others say - you have to go through the process. You may be lucky and have an understanding seller, you may not. (I had someone who told me their baby placed the bid without them knowing, yeah right, did they not check your "items I'm bidding on" section?) If you are lucky then someone else may have been bidding and the seller will be able to offer the item to the second bidder - but you won't know until you tell them, Don't delay. If they won't retract then you have to pay, but you can always sell it again on eBay yourself!
Yep ..
There is a relatively new system where the buyer and seller can mutually agree to cancel the sale.
Look for the link.
