Is there a direct relation between the amount you eat and how much comes out at the other end?

Yes and no. If you eat a lot of fibrous food, ie fruit, vegetables, wholemeal bread, grains etc. then the volume of , um, end product will be linearly proportional. If you eat a lot of junk food or meat/protein/fat this tends not to form bulky end prducts. So you could pig out on steaks all day and still not produce a pan-filler.
