If it was necessary to wait for pain (or other symptoms) to occur before cancer could be diagnosed there would be no point in screening programmes, such as cervical smears.

Short and simplistic answer.
The pain in cancer is usually due to the location of the tumour, pressing against other organs, blood vessels, or nerves within the body. The other common source of pain in cancer often comes from the treatment with either chemotherapy or radiotherapy. So, in the early stages, patients may well be diagnosed with cancers consisting of solid tumours in their early stage of development and these may very well be painless.

For similar reasons, it may be possible to be diagnosed with a cancer without any obvious symptoms.
Pain....unbelievable pain.

I'm sure there are some cancers that do not have the same amount of pain but......when in doubt.

My Dad was drinking morphine at the end.

The big hard man he was.

Why do you ask????
hope you are ok danny day
I also hope so pink......this makes me sad :-(
Oh danny whatever your fears or your pain please take advice often the truth is less scary than he fears we harbour and i speak as a real scaredy cat and one who has lost someone to cancer, often we talk ourselves into situations but by neglecting them it does nothing to help.

is cancer always associated with pain?.......NO

can you be diagnosed with cancer but not actually have any pain or obvious symptoms?..........................YES
I've had cancer now for 6 years, started off with breast cancer which spread to my spine and has now got into my lungs and ribcage and scull, I can honestly say that I have had pain but bearable pain, I didn't even realise that I had cancer for the first 3 years, just thought it was a bad back so Schultz is right.
my bloke was diagnosed with cancer and had no pain just a big lump. As lazy gun said its the pressure on parts of the organs that causes the pain
My mum has breast cancer - she would not have known if it had not been due to the mammogram.

So I would say yes you can be diagnosed without any obvious symptoms
Not everybody has pain with cancer, my husband had it. He wasn't well, but had no pain. If you are worried go to see your doctor. As mamyalynne says the truth can be less scary than the worry.

Take care
