Have just come back from the docs,  he says I may have scleritis and he has referred me to a specialist as it has recurred three times in the last six months. Has anyone had any experience of this?  I have never heard of it and as there is rarely anything wrong with me its got me a little worried.  Thanks in advance.

Scleritis is an inflammatory disease that affects the conjunctiva, sclera, and episclera (the connective tissue between the conjunctiva and sclera).  It is associated with underlying systemic diseases in about half of the cases.  The diagnosis of scleritis may lead to the detection of underlying systemic disease.  Rarely, scleritis is associated with an infectious problem.

The affected area of the sclera may be confined to small nodules, or it may cause generalized inflammation.  Necrotizing scleritis, a more rare, serious type, causes thinning of the sclera.  Severe cases of scleritis may also involve inflammation of other ocular tissues.

I had a bout of it a few months back.  I work in the Op Theatre and asked one of the eye surgeons for his opinion.  He said I had episcleritis and that it can sometimes flare from nothing though I ought to monitor any more bouts as he told me it can possibly sometimes be an indicator of the onset of rheumatoid arthritis.

Hope I haven't put the mockers on it by telling you that!
