How can you burst both ear drums? Surely by a decompression or a heavy blow to the ears?! I heard of someone who burst both - don't know how, but I imagine it wouldn't be by the above. Any other ways?

The shockwave of an explosion can cause this - not very common in the UK at present though, more a wartime thing.
my daughter managed it through infection - was not a happy bunny. However once they're burst the pain stops, and they can usually fully heal (may affect the person's ability to hear certain frequencies in later life)
Both answers above are quite correct but with both ear drums perforated then physical abuse comes to mind.
Questioner said BOTH eardrums. Really bad luck if BOTH perforate following infections. But article is correct in the following an infection the perforation almost always heals and hearing loss due to infection is usually temporary.
fair point, but you aren't precluded from having both eardrums perforated through infection. I'd be very careful before jumping to conclusions of abuse! Further, pressurisation/depressurisation can be a common reason - see here for an extreme example!

Whickerman I had both ear drums perforated due to infection when I was a kid so I agree with you. There was no abuse!
Whickerman..........LOL LOL I like it.

Coccinelle.. I didn't say bilateral perforations precluded infection, I said that it would be bad luck.

Whickerman and coccinelle........I wasn't suggesting that physical abuse was common or was I jumping to that conclusion, all I said was it was a consideration.
An infraction with a good martial artist may cause this to happen. It is quite simple with two cupped hands, opportunity and motive.
I have had both ear drums perforated by infection -the last was excrutiatingly painful but when it perforates the relief is instant followed by a helluva blood.Even my GP said it was the most painful thing he had experienced -he obviously hasnt had children lol.
The other occasion was scuba diving.
As I have perforated one ear 3times it has left me a bit hard of hearing hence the reason im loud !!
