recently afew people have told me that i am alot older than my time - infact their adding seven years onto my age and one person was almost "shocked" when i said no! im 23 not 30!

i dont understand why people think im old for my age? i know obviously no one here knows me personally - but what do you think makes someone appear older than they are? i dont know if its how i talk, what i talk about, i dont know. in fairness it has only been people from work - im pleased my friends havent said so - although now im wondering if their thinking it!

(2-part post):

There are lots of reasons why you could appear older than you are. Firstly, of course, it could be purely physical. That's not necessarily a bad thing. When I was at college, a fellow student was (because of an hereditary condition) 'going grey' at 18 years old. By the age of 20 his hair was totally silver. All of the women were falling at his feet because he looked so 'distinguished'. Looking older is definitely an advantage at times!

Equally, it could be your attitudes. I used to work with a guy who was constantly going on about how young people no longer understood what good music sounded like, and saying things like "it was never like that in my day". How old was he? 60? 50?, No, he was 19!!! (So, perhaps your attitudes are tending towards the stereotypical 'grumpy old man'?).
Or it could simply be that you've got a very mature outlook on life. When I was teaching teenagers, I had a 14yo girl in my class who could have easily written an 'agony aunt' column for any magazine. She had a far more mature outlook on life (with a corresponding understanding of human relationships) than many adults could ever hope to attain. So perhaps the misconceptions about your age are a tribute to your maturity?

OK, those are my thoughts. I'll finish with an anecdote which explains why I no longer bother about age:

When I was 46, I wanted to go swimming. The only public session at the local pool that afternoon was for 'over-fifties'. I knew that they didn't ask for birth certificates, so I thought that I might sneak in. I walked up to the counter and asked for a ticket. The assistant looked at me and said, "Certainly sir. Do you qualify for our over-60s discount?". OUCH!! At that point I totally gave up on bothering about how old people think I am ;-)

Chris
I have been told I have an "old soul" (whatever that means)!

But never been in the same situation as Buenchico with his swimming lol......sorry Chris :-)
I agree with Chris. Attitude, how you conduct yourself, knowledge when conversing, an ability to watch and understand - lots of small things can make a person seem more mature than maybe they are.
Well I must be doing alright then Ice, someone woman at work last week thought I was in my 30's...........and I am 46! way hey!!

well when i think about it ive been going out drinking since i was 15 and there was never a single occasion where i would get asked for ID! Ever! im not going bald or grey though lol :P i think you might be right - it could be down to my outlook on life - and i suppose i am more mature than i probably realised (i dont mean that in an arrogant way!) but i must admit in a very strange and wierd kinda way - when i compare myself to other 23 year olds, male or female a part of me feels, sort of jelous! maturity is good, but its like i fell the only time i can enjoy myself is when im drunk and i really let myself go. i feel like all i do is complain and moan and b1tch about things all the time - so when i think about it thats probably why people think im older than i am. ya reckon?
That's cool hun!

Lol...who'll be back again ziggy???
lmao ice
Sorry....vacant moment..... (grin)
but i'm pretty sure lmao invented it for me lmao
Danny - I'm quite tall, and could get into bars and clubs when I was 14, if not before. Hangs head in shame!!! Then when I got to about 22.....I sort of stopped where I am now. I think it's just a case of being something genetic. Some people look older, some younger.
i'm feeling a need to put them purple jodpurs on again
