when i touch a certain area on the back of my head it feels like ive been whacked there and have a bruised, tender, raised area. however, such a thing has not happened to me so i wonder why it feels like this? im feeling a little run down and wondered if you have glands at the base and back of your skull, a bit like you have them in your throat>

the only glands around your skull are sweat glands, alike with skin all over your body. It may be that you have a localised skin infection that may be caused by an 'ingrowing hair folicle' or for no cause at all.

If the raised area of which you mention is tender and soft to touch then this may be as simple as a "large spot" on your head.

Spot's are simply an area of the skin where bacteria has entered and caused a local reaction.

If a spot appears on your face then you notice it straight away and deal with it, however under the hair on your head it can manifest itself for a longer period of time before you know it's there.

I am sure this problem will go away but if it doesn't clear itself within a week then have it checked by your GP or Practice Nurse.
I have a lump at the back of my head which feels soft and I asked my GP about it as I was very concerned and was told it is a cyst and nothing to worry about.
I know what you're talking about mandimoo. I get that myself sometimes, especially when I have a headache. Right at the base of my skull, in the hollow bit, it feels slightly swollen and very tender to touch. It always goes away shortly after my headache does. I've often wondered why this happens and whether it's swollen and tender because of the headache or I have the headache because of the swelling. But I've not been too concerned because it doesn't happen often and it does go away. I too would love to know more about why it happens.
