The joint of my big toe on my right foot, on the side of my foot, is all big and round and bony- much bigger than the one on my left. I didn't worry about it, but now it is hurting and affecting the way I walk. Is this a bunion? Any cures or suggestions?

sounds very much like it. There are many things you can get to relieve it although I haven't heard of anyone actually getting rid of one completely? Go speak to your local pharmacist, they usually are pretty good with things like this.
I`ve had a bunion for well over 20 years. It does make it difficult to get "nice" shoes & if I`ve been walking a lot it does get painfull. There are a lot of things you can buy but I`ve not found anything to help.
PS. If your bunion is quite new, see a chiropodist as he can give you better advice than a chemist.
