Bigmamma, I always think of dietitians as quasi-professionals who hang around the edge of the medical establishment and get paid to tell us what we should already know, or , if we don't, have the ability to find out for ourselves.
Hi bigmamma, sorry can't help you on this one, just popped in to say hello. I was very healthy this morning then my husband bought me a vanilla slice, what can you do eh?
Lol - Meant to say, I ate very healthy this morning!
Hi bigmamma,
How are you? What is the reason you have to see a Dietician. Is it because you are carrying too much weight, or the opposite?
They will ask you what sort of foods you eat, what exercise you take and I am aware exercise is limited with your ill health. What time of day do you eat, how many fuit and veg consumed in a day. IN fact, they ask everything under the sun.
Good luck!

Hi skyep ...yummy :-) xx
That's what I wondered stewey , will I get fountains of new knowledge , or will they just shake their heads and tell me to go away ? !!!
It was the hospital doctor, the week before last when I was there with asthma , who wrote to my GP to order one. xx

Hi cruella , gosh , if they ask about everything I better make sure I know what colour underwear I have on !
I do not keep in good health and do not excersise , apart from when I walk . I am 40 kilos and am 5ft 5 btw. :-)
they will weigh you and measure you, then ask you to fill out a food diary. then some info about exercises you can do and what food you can eat (normally the tasteless stuff!)

then they will ask you back next week for more of the same and a proper drubbing if you have so much as gained a pound!!

my other half went to one, it didnt do him any good, he has lost a couple of stone since by not taking there advice ;)
40 kg is underweight for your height, surely?
Hey bigmamma - Not much taller than me then, I'm 5ft 2
I am 5'4" and weigh around 50kg and I am considered underweight,40kg is seriously underweight I would have thought. I hope they manage to help you bigmamma.
Hi bigmamma
They obviously want to see you put some weight on.
You know, they go on if someone is overweight then they grill you if you are underweight.
They would probably like you to be above seven stone.
I would give it a go bigmamma. Nothing really to lose. Probably advise on foods to eat to put some weight on but if you are uncomfortable with the clinic, you have a right not to go back.
I have a theory that no-one knows their own body, better than themselves. Try it and it if is not for you, tell your Doctor.
Hope you get on okay!

Hi Ethel , I suppose it is :-)
Hi BM - I was just wondering whether it has anything to do with high cholesterol too?

The reason I ask, is because I have an appointment with the practise nurse next week for a chat about diet & exercise. The reason being that the results of my cholesterol test was still high at 7.0.

It has come down from 7.4 six months ago, but my Doc doesn't want to put me on 'statins' yet, but to go on a low fat - no fat diet & excercise. I wouldn't mind, but I'm slim, don't eat fatty food, walk & swim anyway!

I did read that you're disabled, so would imagine that exercise for you would be quite difficult to do.

You just can't win either way!
bigmamma, I had no idea you were such an irony! You are teeny-tiny!

I haven't experienced a dietician, although the nurse told me I was too fat for the pill last year! That's always good to hear. Apparently I am not, either. And would it be better if I didn't receive it, and then became pregnant?

You can probably find out a lot about building your weight from internet sources, and other people here. I could tell you plenty about building weight ;) But perhaps that wouldn't be such a healthy way!
xx
I took my daughter to a dietician when she was younger as she wouldn't eat properly and wasn't gaining enough weight for her age (so they said). She was a lovely woman, she just asked about what she ate and drank, where did she think she was going wrong with food and gave her a few little exercises to do and a book on keeping healthy.

Smudge , I have no idea what my cholesterol is , though I expect they did test it when they took bloods are my minor stroke a few months ago.
Leelapops , hi, I used to be 5ft 7 but have lost a bit of height due to arthritis , goodness knows if I will keep shrinking !!!
Sandrajo , I hope your daughter is well and I am pleased to hear her dietician was nice.

Ive not read all the answers as am in a rush now. Sometimes yes, a dietician is just teaching you to suck eggs, I know the dos and donts but as I was insulin resistant I needed extra advice and had no idea. I used to eat loads of fruit but didn;t realise some fruit could be bad for people like me. This has all kicked my insulin receptors back into work and I am no longer at risk of diabetes.

I imagine you 're going to put on weight. She'll just tell you how to eat healthily but put some good fats in etc. Some of us are just the way we are......lucky cow lol
Right bigmamma - Where do you live? Your coming to tea!
Hi Bigmamma,

Dieticians are not just there to advise on reducing and increasing weight, they will be able to advice you on all sorts of things that will help with acute or chronic medical problems e.g. asthma, diabetes, reumatism etc. Sometimes when you have more than one ailment, it can be difficult to balance out your diet to the best benefit. - e.g. taking oils to help with your joints and not having too many because of high cholesterol - or something like that (I am not an expert before anyone tells me I have picked a poor example!).

I guess that they also would like to see you gain weight without it agrievating any other conditions.

Other posters are correct I think in that the dietician will want to know what you eat and how foods makes you feel.

I would look upon it as an opportunity for some good advice rather than a scary imposition!

btw - I don't think that you will need clean underwear - feel free to keep this weeks pants on til then! ; )
I'm sorry to hear you had a mini stroke BM & hope things improve for you very soon. -xx-
