Sin

I have a problem with the whole concept of 'sin.' The very word annoys me. It is never a word used in day to day conversation, except when referring to religion. We don't for example, when telling our child off for a wrong doing tell them that they have sinned and we don't use this word about ourselves in any way. However, when in the confession box, the first sentence is "Forgive me father, for I have sinned!" ...or words to that effect.
Does anyone else feel this way about the verb To sin?

Yes, Le Chat, I feel precisely that way about the word 'sin' -and its connotations.

It seems a 'sin' is a wrong doing against the church or god,but in law they are called 'crimes'

wee not really bundleone- the church looks upon adultery as a sin, but as far as I know it's not against the law.

what word do you use for wrongdoing that is not a crime? Misbehaving? Doing wrong?

Any of those words and more, but never 'sin!'

Sin is a horrible word and a difficult concept. It's not just 'doing wrong' it is falling short of the perfection of God, so we are all in a constant state of sin even when we are watching the tele or reading an improving book.

Predestination is another tricky one as well.

'Sin' is not just a classification for certain types of actions. 'Sin' is a curse placed on humanity for "disobeying God" in a singular instance of satisfying the insatiable curiosity God created us with.

Allegedly our most primitive ancestors were placed in a garden and told that we were not to eat of the fruit of one tree which grew in the midst (the very centre) of that garden. As if that were not enough to drive them completely mad God also saw fit to place a talking snake in the garden along with them insuring our destiny and sealing our fate.

Somehow we were supposed to know better before eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, right from wrong. Yet some of us still reject the dictates passed down by self-appointed authority figures who obviously don't have a clue as to what the hell they are doing.

Sin is purely a religious concept which need not worry the rational person. The normal thing is to observe the law when it comes to legalities and your own conscience when itcome to moral matters.
In addition to those (and with a large overlap) religions invent sins which vary from religion to religion and sometimes within a religion. Contraception is a sin to a Roman Catholic but not to an Anglican. Giving blood to a dying child is a sin to a Jehovah's Witness but not to anyone sane. To a Jew it is a sin to press a switch on a Saturday. And so on.
Sins are like the rules of a particular club: if you don't belong to that club they don't concern you.

Religion - The biggest load of old bo**ocks there is.

Don't do that it's a sin, whilst half the church are messing with kids. All based on a 2000 year old fairytale.
