Got cream about two weeks ago from doctor but it hasn't helped.  Anything I can do myself as I won't be able to see doctor before Christmas.  First time for me and think it is coming from having Type 2 Diabetes

You might not be able to see a doctor before Christmas but I'm sure that you can see a pharmacist.  So that should be your first port of call.

The section headed 'Things you can do yourself to ease discomfort and prevent thrush returning' here might help a bit but you really need to seek out an anti-fungal treatment which actually works fo you:

Talk to your pharmacist, you can be creams and tablets over the counter.  Eat yoghurt.  Drink plenty of fluids.

thanks for answering but I have read the links and read other things and I can't get over I am supposed to have white discharge - I have absolutely nothing like that - just a complete itch.  nothing more -

Have you tried athletes foot powder?

Question Author

ach douglas - no to that answer as I don't have athletes trouble as I can't run very far

If it's just an itch, jinny, have you tried Lanacane? The chemist will be able to advise

Canesten is very good for thrush.

Assuming it is vaginal thrush my wife asks if you have a heavy, dragging feeling in that area.

Have you changed your personal soap or washing detergent recently?

You need canestan combi...a vaginal pessary and a tube of cream. Insert the pessary and use the cream on the outside two or three times a day.

should sort it out, buy it at the pharmacy.

if your type 2 diabetes is out of control and your blood sugars are high, you need to get them under control or the thrush will just keep recurring.

It may take more than 1 round of treatment jj .

Try Vagisil if it's just an itch and no discharge.

I'd recommend Vagisil also. Also avoid scented cleansers. There are several Vagisil cleansers available also.

Canestan is the answer.  See your local  pharmacist and explain.

Live yoghurt  helps in the meantime.

They now won't sell Caneston combo now to over 60s.  It has to be prescribed.  But I think there is a self test you can buy.  Apparently older women who have never experienced  thrush could have something that needs investigation.

Live yoghurt from the fridge is very soothing.

If you can't get yoghurt then a boiled face cloth plunged into ice cold water and placed on to you itchy regions will bring relief

I think the answer here is sugar levels.  Have a planned five days of low sugar intake, use Canestan cream constantly and wash frequently. You should see results.  If no, get to the quack forthwith.

I know the thing about over 60s and canestan combi but under JJs circumstances and not being able to see GP before Christmas, I'd get it anyway (tell the pharmacist it's for your younger neighbour or something) for the relief it will give.

She's not going to do herself any harm using it once, it may just solve the problem, and if the problem persists then she can see her GP when she can get an appointment after Christmas.

I should also say not everyone gets a discharge when they have thrush.
