Ive just been told i have a liver problem but they're not sure what it is yet, its pretty mild whatever it is, but 1 thing they mentioned was Hemochromatosis.

they took lots of blood and said id hear in 3 weeks or so - however, i am on prescription iron tablets, 3 a day, ferrous fumerate

should i stop taking them? for now at least?
i didnt think to ask at the time & it was another doctor i'd never met before & cant even remember his name now, so its not like i can just ask him.

Thanks :)

(info - i was in hosp recently with a duodenal stenosis & blocked stomach, and had some malnutrition.
i also was anaemic & given an iron infusion, & also given 3 blood transfusions because of low HB)

While you're waiting for Sqad (although he never seems to sleep!) . .

Haemochromotosis is too much iron in the body.

Joko......the above information gives the game away in that you had an iron deficiency anaemia, too little iron which makes a diagnosis of Haemochromotosis extremely unlikely.

Continue with your iron medication until your next medical appointment.

thanks all

i thought that too sqad but the doc said its probably the anaemia that has stopped the iron building up & going into overload in my liver, as its a build up, because for some reason iron is not dispelled as normal & stays in the liver getting more and more built up with iron over time (something like that)
so i presumably i can have an overload & anaemia at the same time.
he had all my notes etc so he would have known about the anaemia etc
i read the main treatment for it is bloodletting!

but other than the iron tablets i have no major source of iron in my diet as i havent eaten meat or fish in 30 years.

they noted while i was in the hospital that the liver anomaly that was showing up could have been due to the intravenous food i was having - i had about 7 bags i think & its known to cause liver problems, & thought i may go away once i stop that.

there is a chance these tests today will be all back to normal (fingers crossed)
the scans etc were all fine too & theyve seemed unsure of the issue the whole time.
its now about 2 months out of hosp

he mentioned contacting my gp, maybe he can double check

thanks

Thanks for the full and helpful reply.
One can be anaemic yet the liver is packed with iron and that is because a low red cell count is causing the anaemia but the cells of the body are packed with iron, but that can be seen in a blood test.

Wait for the liver tests to come light and I would be interested in making a comment.

I am not enamoured with a diagnosis of Haemochromatosis on the facts so far.

ok i'll post results, he said about 3 weeks - they took 8 vials
Joko....if the results will take 3 weeks to surface, then i would start a new thread, as by then this will be lost in the maze of threads.
