3 weeks ago I slipped on wet leaves and broke a couple of bones in left hand as I put my hands out to try and protect myself. Have a splint. Been referred to a hospital in central London with a specialist hand trauma clinic. Which is all fine(tho awkward) Thing is the pain is literally as bad as the day I did it - it isn't a fraction better. Still pulsating with pain - surely it should be feeling somewhat better by now??

When is your appointment?
The pulsating pain sounds like the splint might be strapped on too tightly. I’m no expert though.
Perhaps ring the specialist and ask.

No I have to take splint off 4 times a day to try and do these tendon gliding exercises as I've broken these couple of silly bones so awkwardly, so I can control how tight it is. The pain is just horrendous still.
usual advice ( which seems never to be taken)
paracetamol 1g regularly by the clock every four hours
and break thro - Ibuprofen
if you take ibuprofen - remember to take dietitian for your stomach.
latest advice is 200-400 three times a day
I would do 200 four times a day

if you get on top of the pain - then you need less to control it (keep it at bay)

[ hahaha not very funny - BUT - my bruvva - ca jaw post op - same advice, and I asked how it went
and he said it hadnt worked. - I was amazed and apologised,
and HE said: he looked on the internet, and the doses looked Very High. so he had halved the dose and was still in pain, you know it wasnt much good.
I said 'oh.' ]

dietician?
no ranitidine or lansop
sozza about that

Thanks PP x
i did suggest before that maybe paracetamol taken in regular doses with Ibruprofen might help.
I would go to the doctors and get stronger drugs. I couldn't believe the difference between codeine and ibuprofen.

When I broke my hand I had a cast for 6 weeks before it was checked again so I'm guessing it takes about 6 weeks to heal ish.

It's so daft - I feel like I'm being a right wuss, it's not a broken leg or arm, but I just cannot believe how much it hurts.
Pain is pain. I've had a few broken bones and I don't think any of them have felt the same pain wise.
Question Author
Hopefully it will start to feel better soon. I have hospital in morning.
Smowball - "surely it should be feeling somewhat better by now??"

It depends on your age.

There are a lot of bones in the wrist and hand, I have found that they take the longest amount of time to heal in regards to pain.

I don't think it should be pulsating pain but I am not a professional in this field.
co codamol is codeine and paracetamol
you can buy codeine over the counter without a prescription (!)
but remember the pharmacist does NOT have to sell it to you

take as advised above
Did you make it worse by attempting to straighten the broken bones yourself?
I broke a couple of fingers and my wrist at the same time. The fingers were definitely the most painful... but they definitely were better once a splint was on, and a few days of ibuprofen and paracetamol were enough.
You may have worse breaks... but mine were 6 weeks to heal properly and I have had no problem since. I was 40 then. If that is any help, also try to keep them up above the elbow as much as possible to reduce any swelling, which will make it pulse.
Question Author
RR yes I did the night I did it as they were sticking out - probably not my wisest move in hindshight!
Question Author
Thanks for all of your replies - I've got co codamol here now. Will see what hosp says in the morning x
Your bones were sticking out of your arm and you set them yourself -you poor thing!
Question Author
Just fingers lol. But it was so late and I just couldn't face sitting for hours and hours in A & E at that time of night. So I went next morning x
Can't get codeine over the counter here.
You can, as co-codamol etc. I think that was what pp meant x
