I'm in my mid thirties and physically, I've never felt better, but when I peek into Chatterbank on this site, I feel quite old because I just don't get it. What is it that makes you feel 'socially old' ?? Is it spotty faced policemen; music; your children's use of language, or something else? Ps. I'm not having a go at Chatterbankers, it's just I feel I'm in an alien world in there; a bit like a child in a new school, where everyone seems bigger than me.

Buddy - you have made a good example of my point though! You put your opinion across both eloquently and with perfect grammar and spelling. You may think spelling and grammar are unimportant, yet they reflect the obvious poor quality of our schools. (What else can it be?) Even Maggie01 says her spelling is no good, yet on reading her answer, it was all looking pretty good!!

Spelling, grammar and punctuation is important but it should also be automatically done without much effort, if that person has been taught properly.

there's the bad spelling you get by hitting the wrong key accidentally, the bad spelling you get when you use difficult words, and the bad spelling you get because you're using txtspk and you just don't care. I don't care enough to answer people who write the latter way. But I only correct people if I think they might need to know the correct spelling - if they sound as if they're doing homework, or if they might need to google a name or something. (Or if they're haranguing other people about spelling and making mistakes themselves, of course.)

It's not really age-specific, but I think older people do regard good spelling as a courtesy to people who are going to read what they write.

Thank you Le Chat.I did have a couple of typos in my posting but that was down to me trying to type quickly.

I can articulate perfectly well and have an inherent interest in grammar, words and healthy debate.I feel for people - not in a patronising way - who dont grasp the basics of spelling and punctuation.I am no better or less than those people because they absolutely could hold their own in any conversation and will have skills I dont have.I dont feel it necessary to pick anyone up.

P.S - You had a few typos yourself in your Sun posting - I just let it go!!!! LOL xx

That P.S was for Stevie - sorry!!xx

Hey, Buddy are you Condescending to Patronise me some more?
Check out the definition of Irony, as in when you criticise someone for something your doing yourself. Or is that hypocrisy? ;)

You know all this discussion about spelling, txtspk etc... is probably being brought about because everybody who uses SMS on a phone gets in the habit of using the smallest possible amount of characters that still have the same meaning, and then they are just too lazy or stupid to go back to normal writing when using a real keyboard without space/time constraints.
Question Author

We've drifted off the point a bit! This question wasn't supposed to concentrate on grammar etc, but the general things that make you feel old, like young, spotty policemen. I posted a question about grammar etc on the Arts & Literature section.
I've been hijacked missus!!!!

Drusilla -it wasnt me who hijacked you - honest.

Stevie - My tonque was firmly in cheek but I think I'll just poke it out at you.See - na na na na na !!

Drusilla - I feel ancient,to answer your question ,in CB - not a clue what anyone is talking about. It should be good craic - better than chat rooms IMO.I notice in AB suggestion a CB for different ages or interests - cant really remember but seems like a good idea.

Just an addendum Drusilla - my daughter makes me feel ancient when at 16 she tells me "Perlease - you dont what you are talking about"O how the mighty will fall - cannae wait !!

O and I forgot the old "How old do you think I am?" and the person ( thinking they are doing you a favour) guessing your correct age. That is a duller and thats what me feel old!!

sorry to go on about language Drusilla but actually that is the main thing that makes me feel old. I'm sure this has always been so - young people always have their own slang - but the actual writing of words in a different way is new to the current younger generation. I think this seems a much more fundamental change than spotty policemen. I can usually understand txtspk but it's really irritating that I'm expected to do so, as if people just can't be bothered using proper English to me.
