Is there any reason why we traditionally eat fish and chips on Friday?

Something to do with Catholics not eating meat on a Friday, so they got their protein from fish instead.
Fish was eaten on Fridays because according the the Catholic Church it was a sin to eat meat on a Friday. Something to do with jesus getting crucified I think.
Well certainly in my family and those of others RCs it was a religious issue with not eating meat on Fridays (Good Friday in particular).

I think to a point it became routine to go to the chippy to give the cook the day off.
gosh did you have a cook growing up? How posh is that!
Very good, in this instance - cook = the one who mainly did the cooking.

Apologies for lack of clarity :-)
No problem -we always sent the butler out for ours.....:-D
We had ours delivered .!
Get you, I was usually sent, with a basin for the peas.
I 'ate you Butler.
We're we not a Catholic family but we always had fish on Fridays. My family might have been weird or steeped in some old traditions. I don't know. However, Friday was always Chippy Shoppy night and lovely it was too, especially if there were mushy peas as well. Oh...and white bread and butter. Lovely!
Don't forget the scraps!
We didn't do scraps. We was posh!
You have just reminded me AL of a sign that hung in the local chippy to advertise cheap scraps. It was of a black cat's rear complete with the furry pencil sharpener.
Just had a flashback to lemon sole for high tea.

Must be forty years now.

Ahh the good old school days bag of chips with scraps on top on the way home

Today I started the tradition of having chicken Madras, pilau rice and alooooooo gobi on a Friday night.
Please feel free to adopt it.
