In the stomach ?
Question Author
Ladybirder, sqad didn't say much about it - and Chris, that appears to relate to the abdominal cavity rather than the stomach.
Question Author
anneasquith, yes, stomach.
Is it fluid actually Inside the stomach ?
Ascites is the general term for such fluid Naomi.

What ascites is
Ascites (pronounced ay-site-eez) is the medical name for a build up of fluid in the abdomen. The abdomen is the area of the body below the ribs and lungs and above the hip bones. It contains many of the body's organs, including the stomach, small and large bowel, pancreas, liver, spleen, and kidneys.

Question Author
I presume so. Why else would they (the doctors) say 'Fluid on the stomach'?
Chris, ascites is common with gastric cancers. I work for two Oncologists, one of whom specialises in Upper GI cancers and ascites is common with that.
The post from Chris covers gastric cancers.
Question Author
Mamyalynne, the stomach is included in the general area of the abdomen? I'm surprised.
When people say, "I've got a pain in my stomach", they usually mean belly/guts. It's one of the drawbacks of English language politeness.
I'll leave it to those qualified, sorry if I have confused the issue with the quote from Cancer Research UK.

Hope you get some satisfactory answers Naomi.
Question Author
Mamyalynne, not at all. I'm sincerely trying to understand this. (You may remember my thread you contributed to a little while ago about a reclusive alcoholic?).
Ascitis is common in liver failure. Some alcoholics have to have the fluid drained off
I do recall and I know how concerned you were - Ascites is also common in those with Cirrhosis, which of course may be worrying you in this case.

I imagine 'fluid on the stomach' may simply be a doctors way of wording something so the patient understands it better.
Question Author
Mamyalynne, Yes, after the responses here I can see that now. I was thinking 'fluid on the stomach' meant 'fluid on the stomach'. Many thanks all.
Must be so hard watching a friend go through this, especially when she chooses to be so reclusive.
My point was the use of the word 'stomach' as a euphemism for lower organs. Other languages are not so refined. 'Tummy', as a child's word for stomach, is wrong.
Question Author
Mamyalynne, a state of mind.

Jackdaw, indeed, but I was thinking 'stomach'. If it were me I'd hope doctors were more accurate.
