looking for any online peer reviewed papers etc
I'm not sure anyone knows long-term yet, they haven't been around long enough. Probably safer than smoking, imo, but possibly not. I found the gum made me feel sick and the patches were brilliant, although I and most people I know, have been allergic to the glue on them.

Thank you Pixie, just done a year on the gum. Dont understand the sickness thing, horses for courses I guess...
Exactly... good luck. If it's working, stick with it xx
Probably not what you want to hear, but after smoking 50 a day I just stopped. I kept a Fox's Glacier Mint in my mouth all the time and I managed it. I was so determined to prove to my husband that I could do it that I made myself. It wasn't easy, but it can be done. We didn't have filter tipped in those days either, so they were Senior Service mostly. It takes a long time to get used to not having one after a meal or in the middle of the night if you wake up, but it really can be done, I think the longer you have these things to help you it prolongs the agony. Good luck anyway xx

This discusses the pros and cons of most things that are used to kick the habit.

Good luck to you if you're giving it a go, nailit. It can be a hard road for a lot of folk, easier for some.
nailit, if you've been on the gum for a year keep at it. I was on Nicorette for two years and then gradually alternated between that and ordinary gum. After a few months stopped the Nicorette and just used the ordinary gum. Now, a few months later I have dispensed with that also. I was using Nicorette for roughly two and a half years and found it caused no problems. Keep going, it's worth it.
