Just to assure our English AB friends, that the world will not end when you start to pay the tiny little 5p charge.

Sadly, there will be some people up in arms when this comes into effect.

Personally, as a till operator and also a person sick of seeing them blowing around our streets, I can't wait.

That's odd, I always thought you were English Mikey?
As an example- I had a customer last night who bought 2 packets of cigs, and requested a carrier bag, as his "pockets were full"...I was stunned, but sadly, I had to comply.

Boo....you will soon be able to charge him 5p for his little packages, so you have that to look forward to !
I know, as I said the other day on here, I can't wait.

Bet his pockets won't be as full then!

Boo....If we could only charge £20 for a packet of cigarettes as well, we might really be able to make some changes !
I am very much in favour of the 5p charge, but I find it hard to see why you would begrudge someone a bag, given they are available.
I will continue to use them, and request them, as they are very useful eg as food waste bags.

ichy....I am fairly certain that you can get food waste bags for a lot less that 5p each....well, from next month anyway.
Funnily enough, Mikey, I was trying to work that one out and came to the conclusion that 5p a bag is still a lot cheaper. They also hold more. I think the idea of this is not to stop the use of bags, but limit it, or encourage re-use. It's obviously worked well in Wales (and many other countries) and it's good to know that England is finally catching up
I can buy a 100 (sometimes 150) bin bags for a quid, so cheaper to buy those than buy a carrier to line my bin with.
When I saw this thread in "latest posts" I thought it was about grumpy old ladies.

Silly me!!
No ozzy it was about grumpy old men.
I live and learn Togo ;-)

Well if you can do that then it obviously is cheaper. The old food waste bags were rather expensive, and the supermarket ones are damned handy, capacity and handle-wise :-)
Good to hear, Mikey......less litter and fewer birds and animals harmed.....my heart would sing if it could do so in tune.....xx
Many years ago you paid 2d (17p at today's prices) for a brown paper and string carrier. I don't remember people complaining then.
