How do you go about finding out your NHS number if you're not registered with a GP?

My daughter moved to Ireland in 2008. Then moved to Australia in 2011. She's back in England now and needs to register with a GP but the local doctors won't register her without an NHS number.

I've phoned the doctors she used to be registered with and they said because she left the country she's been taken off their books so they have no way of finding out her NHS number (I wonder what has happened to her medical records!)

Any ideas what to do next?

and explain the situation. Give all the information you possibly can.
you need to phone your local PCT (primary care trust) who will give her the number. Google wherever you live (county) and pct to find the number. The GP surgery should be able to help you with this. Some areas now don't call their PCT a PCT, if you need any further help and don't mind saying which county you live in, post again and I will try and help (retired NHS manager)

Thanks hc and woof..

Woof, she's in London. She was last registered in Northampton.
her PCT should be in this list

if it has changed then the link should reflect this.

Thank you. I'll pass that on :-)

The poor girl is really suffering :-(
if she is ill and can prove her entitlement to NHS treatment, (UK passport) she can be treated as a visitor. My late Mum has had visitor treatment at my GP, she didn't have to produce her NHS number, just her passport. The other option would be a walk in centre or an A and E. Same thing, take passport.
woofy, you are WELL out of date - NO area has a PCT anymore, and the links in your link lead to nothing.
It seems really odd they wont register her without an NHS number - is she british? british passport?
Hmmm...I typed an apology earlier and its vanished, I am sorry, i thought those links would lead to updated info. I did know that the PCT's have gone but in most cases, new links have been added to take you to the right place in the new organisation.
ummmm, how is your daughter today?

I thought it was weird they wouldn't register her. She has a British passport.

She's broken out in psoriasis from chest to toes. It looks very bad. They sent her to a walk in medical centre so hopefully they have advised her how to get her number.

Just spoke to her. They have registered her after she got upset!!
Good! honestly I despair of GP surgeries!
