Gas Leak

At 4 AM this morning I smelt gas in the cupboard where the gas meter is.
I phoned 0800-111-999 and within 20 minutes an engineer arrived. (the people on the phone told me to turn off the gas and open doors and windows and not to switch on anything electrical)
He was very meticulous and worked for about an hour to fix the leak.
I was very grateful for this prompt service which was completely free.

We had a problem with our electrics. Phoned British Gas who sent someone round. I asked how much it would cost and he said nothing, part of the service.

I've needed National grid (used to be Transco) twice as emergency...gas and electricity scare the life out of me. I agree Robert, here within 20 mins, lovely guys both times.

I had a very different experience with National Grid. They were working in road outside renewing pipes for the street when they knocked on my door & told me I had a gas leak.

Oh my goodness I said, can you fix it? (I was more than happy to pay anything to be safe!) They said a flat NO, all we can do is cut you off, you will have to arrange your own repairs.

Could they recommend someone? again NO - go through the Yellow pages I was told.

So thats what I did but on one could come out for a couple of days so sat in a freezing cold house for days worrying myself sick.
I would have been more than willing to pay them, but it was their lack of concern & unhelpfulness that upset me.

?? surprised that they didn't advise you to your supplier, silliemille - the point of responsibility is the meter, anything upside Transco's (Nat Grid) resposnibility, anything on your side, yours and your supplier. What was the resolution?

They said it was coming from my property so was my responsibility which I totally accepted, I did get it done and paid a local gas man to do it but I was very upset at the time.

I know I should have complained but just was glad to get it over with.

silliemillie - if you know which side of the metering point it is.....my suspicion is that you shouldn't have paid as most folk's meters are close to the house....

I dont really know DT but they said it was my responsibilty and knowing nothing about these things I had to believe them, I couldnt really prove otherwise.
At the time I was so concerned with getting my house safe, its not till after you start thinking a bit more about the whys & wherefores.

That is understandable, millie, the safety that is.

However, I wouldn't want to see you ripped off. I would ask the company for a breakout of the work done and which side of the meter it was........then take it from there. My suspicion is that the "Nat Grid" had a contractor and this was a bit of a scam.........check with your supplier too.
