If you had to get rid of one of your 5 senses (taste, smell, sight, hearing, touch) which one would it be? Lets just say theoretically that getting rid of one wouldn't affect the other 4! (ie. getting rid of smell wouldn't affect your taste). I always thought that I'd get rid of smell or taste but I don't know whats worse.. never being able to taste a bacon sandwich or not being able to smell a gas leak?!

Smell. The others are too important, I could live without smell.

If I lost my sight...would not be a happy day.

Hmmm...I was going to say smell too, but I enjoy food and eating so much and smell is definitely part of the experience so I think I would have to say hearing...I can still read and watch TV and as said, taste and smell is too important as is sight and touch....

Yeah but you dont know what you've got until its gone.. if she never had her sense of smell how cans he miss it?
yeah id derrinatly get rid of smell, everytime we go to my mums we go past a sewer resevouir, and the stench!!!!!   oh my god....makes me wanna puke
Definitely smell.  As long as it wouldn't affect my taste. Sometimes though there are certain things I would prefer not to hear.
smell, then i can enter the toilet happily after my mother in law!
OHHH twiglet I'm telling

The senses are not realised in theire importance by those who know tem ( as compared to unfortunate people who are born so - no sight, no sound, for example). I no longer have no feeling in my lower left leg and lasqt winter I had to go and feed the geese. The number of times I was cursing as I couldn't xhut the barn door and I had to because the cat would try and follow. I'd try slamming the door and finally look down to realise it wouldn't shut because my foot was blocking it! The bruises I have every winter! But it didn't hurt.....

So to answer your question, kazzee, mybe

Drat. .....maybe "TOUCH"?.
twiglet, strike a match. Burns up odours.
smell definitely - not that I want to lose any of them
twiglet - strike a match and burn up the mother-in-law:-)
It would have to be taste. Much of the enjoyment of food comes from the odour, not the taste. If you loose your sense of smell, everything tastes of cardboard since the tongue can only detect sweet, sour, salty and bitter. I'm assuming that if you had no sense of taste, you'd still be able to "taste" the food through the smell it makes. You can hold your nose in a smelly loo!
if i strike a match in there i would probably blow myself out the window!!! talk about potent!!! If Osama were to get just 1 sample from my mother- in-law he would have a serious terrorist weapon on his hands! The lord himself couldnt protect my lungs the next time i am caught short and she has been to stay! In fact saying that losing my smell is also a healthy option is probably the right thing to say cos if i have to enter there after she has had a chicken tikka i am sure i would end up losing all sensation in my other senses like my eyesight! Taste, well i will lose that too as i am likly to be chewing on the stuff !!

Ralph - I did say in the question 'If you could get rid of one of your senses without it affecting the other 4' .. I know that smell affects the taste, thats why I wrote that in the question.. so people didn't keep writing 'smell controls our taste'.
kazzee, good point, but I guess I said smell because I do know what it's like when its gone....I spend much of my time not really smelling at all. Sight, on the other hand, almost fills all of consciousness for all of your waking hours.
When I was 18 I had an ''accident'' which caused anosmia, which is the loss of taste and smell and I miss smell MUCH more than taste.
