Hi there I was really anxious last night and I took a 5mg diazepam tablet I keep them for emergencies maybe I have one once a fortnight. But this afternoon I have been having really disturbing thoughts of suicide I dont want to do it because I have a lot to live for a bit stressed re money and I get lonely but otherwise ok too scared to talk to my GP in case I get sectioned. I was just wondering if it was the diazepam that has set this off

Yes......indeed, but it is unusual, but has been reported in many studies.

What should I do about these suicidal thoughts?
gordie.....ignore them.
Sqad ... I CANNOT believe your last reply.

Gordie ... See your GP asap. You will not be sectioned xx
NoM......I initially answered geodie's first question.

My reply of "ignore them" didn't mean ignore them but don't commit suicide...ignore them.

OK?
Sqad, I have the utmost respect for you. However, as the medically trained person you are, I'm astonished that you could be so blasé about someone expressing suicidal thoughts. I lost my younger brother to suicide, and I know only too well that once it's too late, it's too bloody late!

Gordie, please see your GP or ring the Samaritans.
NoM....

\\\ok too scared to talk to my GP in case I get sectioned. \\\

"See your GP ASAP " is not an option as he stated in his original post.

I didn't mean my reply to be blase.
Sqad, that's too blasé, not helpful at all - it falls into the "pull yourself together" advice catergory.

Gordie, you won't be sectioned for feeling suicidal or anxious - thousands of people are, it's almost a fact of modern life with all the stresses people face.

Please go and see your GP - they won't think you're OTT.
Yes, they can cause suicidal thoughts. It is not "rare".
You need to speak to your GP, as soon as possible.

In the meantime, speak to these...

Don't feel stupid, or embarrassed, just call them.
sorry sqad, your post crossed with mine ;-)
My husband has always been told to see his GP if he ever feels suicidal.

You could make an appt to see your out of hours GP if you're feeling that bad. Is there a friend or family member you could ring? x
gordie - if you are still feeling 'odd' phone the Samaritans or go see your GP at the beginning of the week.

Feeling suicidal is a very scary place to be but your best way out of it is to seek medical advice or to talk it over.

I have been suicidal and I can only empathise with you - it is a horrendous feeling.

This is also a good website, but more for the anxiety side of things.
They also have a phone number, although I don't think it's 24/7 like the samaritans.

There's lots of help out there. You don't have to suffer in silence.
Accident and Emergency Departments should have someone available from the mental health team as well to help you should you need them at any time out of normal GP opening hours so there is always somewhere you can go if you feel you need to along with other advice above.
Please go see your GP and explain the thoughts you are having. You won't be sectioned. Your GP will be able revise/change your medication to something more suitable for you.
In the meantime, do you have anyone who could come and keep you company?
And as the others have said, the Samaritans are always available.

I phoned NHS24 and a CPN from the out of hours team phoned me and was really helpful she explained that lack of sleep and diazepam combined can cause this I have only been getting 4 hours sleep a night for the last week. She advised me to write down everything I felt good about and had to look forward to and to have an argument with the suicidal thoughts Sounds a bit weird and to imagine being on a beautiful beach and the thoughts ebbing away like the sea. She told me not to take any more valium even thogh I am feeling agitated to have a hot bath and camomile tea for the agitation I am feeling and if not any better tomorrow to ring but I will not get sectioned apparently it is really difficult to get people sectioned. She does not think I need to see emergency psychiatrist at the moment she is first port of call for mental health team she was lovely so glad I rang
geodie...thanks for the feedback.
Sqad, if it appeared as though I was tearing a strip off you, I apologise...I wasn't. I just thought your response was misjudged.

We all appreciate your invaluable medical advice.

However, I know from bitter experience that suicidal expressions should never be taken lightly.

Friends again? ;)
Well done gordie, do has she says.
NoM...we have never not been friends..;-)

Perhaps putting me in my place noe and again is not a bad thing.
