Woke up this morning and the ball of my left foot is really painful and stiff - right inside the joint. It is aching all the time and is painful if I try to flex my foot. I wasn't doing anything unusual yesterday and it was fine when I went to bed. Still very sore :o( - right foot is perfectly fine. Any ideas on what I might have done to it and if it will go away by itself?

Gout?
Hi Annie :)

Sounds ridiculous, but could you have stepped on something? Have a good look and see if anything pierced the skin. Sounds painful! :-(
Could be several things, the way you slept, insect bite (well..could be) something you didn't notice yesterday and wasn't painful. Hope you find out what it is and the pain lessens for you annie.

Thanks guys, had a google at Gout SJ and i don't think so, it is not red or swollen, just painful. I've had a close look and can't see a bite mark at all, although touching the fleshy bit at the side of the joint does make it worse :o(

Had to tromp about all over Edinburgh today too as we were in for some festival stuff but actual noticed the pain more when I wasn't moving as the inactivity seemed to make it stiffer.

Hopefully I'll wake up tomorrow and it'll be gone.
I agree with 237SJ.....take Ibuprofen 600mgs twice daily and it will be gone by Wednesday morning.

You think it's gout too Sqad? Is that not diet related? I know it used to be associated with heavy drinkers but that isn't really always the case I understand. (I rarely drink!). I saw that it's very rare in pre-menopausal women, I'm 45 and getting symptoms now so maybe it is then :o(. Guess i'll have to read up a bit more.

thanks btw :o) back into Edinburgh again tomorrow but i'll try to keep the tromping about to a minimum :o)
annie,,,it is a myth about drinkers.

I find that using search engines may be confusing, inaccurate and alarming in medical cases.
Sqad, most medics dislike patients finding more out about their ailments on tinternet but I think if you have an open mind whilst searching at least you will have an idea of how to talk to your doc about it. In some instances I've been able to furnish the medics with information they were unaware of just by searching on tinternet. One has to be realistic and not believe everything you read when it's "horror stories".
Isn`t gout something to do with uric acid? Drink can cause that can`t it? My sister`s husband used to get gout and he was a kidney patient. I always assumed it was something to do with that.

Sqad, i've been in doctors surgeries where the GP has used google as a diagnosis tool :o). I hear what you are saying though, I also think that daisy's point is true too that sometimes it may make you more aware of some less obvious symptoms that you may not have connected and therefore provide a full explanation to the GP. Having said that, they should be asking the right questions in the first place.

Well, i'll just take my gouty foot and get ready for another day of walking about.
daisya....just my opinion.

237SJ Gout is an error of metabolism which results in the deposition of uric acid crystals in various parts of the body and has nothing to do with the excessive imbibing of alcohol. One can even get a type of gout where there is no demonstrable levels of uric acid in the blood.

Having had a wee google, I think if it is gout, it was triggered by dehydration. On Friday, i was really busy at work and it wasn't until I was having dinner that I realised that apart from my milk in my cereal, I hadn't had anything to drink all day. Cracked on with loads of housework on Saturday so didn't drink much then either. Have only had one small bottle of fruit juice and one glass of squash today too so just going to have a couple of glasses of water - probably be up half the night needing the loo, but the dehydration would probably explain the headache and tiredness too I think!
Oh dear annie, worst thing dehydration, can cause all sorts of problems that's for sure. Definitely have lots of water tonight but tomorrow you should really go to town and have plenty, then you should pick up a bit and see how things are. Hope it all turns out ok for you...don't forget....water...lots of it lol.
a plantar surface tendon problem perhaps....try a shoe with a foot arch in it to support it
Question Author
thanks DT - maybe put my trainers on tomorrow- thanks too daisy, out and about tomorrow and tend not to drink too much due to the lack of "facilities" or clean ones at least - refuse to use the train!!
Use the loos in hotels Annie - they tend to be clean
Question Author
Thanks Euphemia :o) - it's central Edinburgh we are talking about here though so the hotels tend to be a bit too posh to sneak in with 2 boys in tow!! I generally send them to the ones in McDonalds while I pretend to queue - then I look as if I have forgotten something and walk back out again!! I'll figure something out. lol
annie....been thinking.

One other contender to compete with gout is..Morton's Metatarsalgia.......although not typical of your symptoms, it can affect the big toe only.

Google it.
Apparently doctors are googling on a regular basis these days, and in front of their patients.

(Sqad, I left you a message in response to your comments about corporal punishment on TRT's thread - apologies to Annie for interrupting)

Am now off to see my doctor to discuss something I 'Googled'!!!
