are you obliged to answer a letter from a solicitor?

It depends entirely on the content of the letter and the basis/reason upon which it was written. More information needed on this.

this is a can of worms, in short, letters have been received from my mother's solicitor asking for me to stop contacting her at home as it upsets her; then letters from the solicitor asking to view the p11d's at the firm that i run, iam a director and so is she, although she has never worked in the company, there is also another working director, the p11d's she want to view relate to me only and not other employees, annual accounts are sent to her as a matter of course each year in which she can see director's salaries etc. iam finding this most unhelpful in running the company. there are also other personal matters too and this is i think personal rather than company!

she could force you through the courts,if you deny her the documents,have you got somthing to hide

The basic, uncomplicated answer to your question is NO. This answer takes no account of the situation and circumstances sorrounding the reason for the letter in the first place. So it may be in your interest to respond but you are quite at liberty to ignore it.
