HELP!!! I am in my 50's and am desperate to lose a couple of stones by May, but nothing seems to work. I have tried slimming clubs, exercise, cutting down on what I eat but so far have had no success.
Any suggestions please.

Aim to exercise every day (just walking a couple of miles is brilliant exercise). If you don't manage it every day, don't worry - 4 times a week is pretty good.
Never skip meals, eat protein, carbs and fruit/veg at every meal. Try to avoid pre-prepared food (cook it yourself so you know whats in it!)
Cut right down on alcohol, caffeine, extra fat and sugar.
Don't go hungry but have sensible portions (as you get older your body needs less calories than it used to, to maintain the same weight - yes, unfair, I know!)
Know your weaknesses - eg. if you love biscuits, don't have them in the house. I lost half a stone in 3 weeks just by cutting out alcohol, and I didn't drink more than 15 units per week before.
Be honest with yourself about what you're really eating.
Tell everyone you know that you're 'being good' so they can encourage you!

Have you had your thyroid function checked ?
More women suffer from it but men can too !
I had the same problem ..I hit nearly fifteen stone and could not shift it any which way in spite of living on fresh air !. I am a tall woman in her late fifties and had I been five feet nothing would have been mistaken for a barrel !
When I went to the GP after feeling under par for ages it turned out I had an underactive thyroid . .... the thyroid gland regulates the body's metabolism.
I would get it checked ..it's only a simple blood test. Since being diagnosed and on the medication I am now eleven stone with little effort on my part really ....just healthy eating and moderate exercise which consists mainly of walking everywhere !.
Since the start of the year, I have been to the gym 9 times, burning 3500 calories and using my heart rate monitor from polar to ensure i`m in the fat burning zone, rather the lactic acid zone! Only had three drinks all year and have lost half a stone, trousers too loose. Swop your fatty foods for alternatives and find a weight loss friend to spur you on. good luck
i really like paul mckenna's way of thinking

1. eat when your truly hungry
2. eat whatever you like
3. stop when you're truly full

obviously there is a bit more to it than that - but they're the basic rules. I think he has a website.
If you want to lose weight, you need a proper diet plan with some good exercises. More details available at

Dolly ponds tips are pretty good. Also try logging exactly what you eat, you could even go the whole hog and use a spreadsheet. Also try weighing stuff like pasta and rice before cooking and only using the correct amount (75gr for me) and not cooking any more. I find it easier to avoid temptation this way of going back for seconds. Don't kill yourself over fatty foods either just think about the calories they contain and definately avoid processed foods and refined carbohydrates.
