Is it safe to crumble a viagra and take it in food or do they need to be taken whole. I know that it is unsafe to take some tablets other than whole and wondered if it applies to viagra

Viagra is better taken whole and not crumbled up as it intended to be taken whole.
Just to warn you taking Viagra with food does delay the onset of action, compared to taking it on an empty stomach (it should say this in the patient information leaflet in the box).
Info courtsey of : http://www.emc.medicines.org.uk/
if you take it crushed your more likely to have a shorter timed experience due to the fact of digestion. it's in the solid state so your body has to break it down and slowly and steadily the chemicals are evenly distributed into your blood stream.

my guess is you wont have fun if you take it crushed. and yes, the point of food from the last post is correct to an extent. your stomache works from the bottom up, so if you take it first, wait a bit, then eat your body will have started to break the pill down, if you eat first, then take the pill you will not have the desired effects at the round-about time that the manufacture says it will take to start working
