Toric lens are used to correct astigmatism -- when your eyeball is slightly out of shape. The main difference I've noticed is that toric lens are so much more expensive - grrrr!
As Mikewith says, Toric lenses are for correcting astigmatism. The astigmatism is in a certain plane so the lens has to be 'the right way up' . Normally they're shaped so the 'heavy' bit is at the bottom of the lens to keep everything lined up. Or there are tiny markings showing orientation. They cost more as they have to be made-to-order unlike the standard non-toric lens which can be mass-produced.. I've a mild astigmatism and so, thankfully, can get away with the standard lens. I never could get on with Torics as when they shift naturally, my world would go squiffy.
