I am managing to stick to a low-GI diet and am losing weight slowly but steadily. I am now under 19 stone, from 22, and am going to increase the amount of exercise that I do.

Is there a 'best way' to do this? I have an exercise bike and a strider and a pilates DVD. I also do some walking.

Is it easy to set out a plan of what to do on which day or should I get a personal trainer to set me out something to follow?

hi susan,

Well done you on the 3 stone. I have lost nearly 3 stone myself now and I am now down to 16st. I have tried all the different types of exercise but I have to say that the best one is walking. I try to walk a total of about 25 miles per week. It is easy if you walk to work etc. then a long walk at the weekend. I think if you join the gym they will advise you on what exercise is best and what your capabilites will be. What ever you decide GOOD LUCK.

As ever, variety is the key. Just moving about more will be an enormous help.
Walking, the bike and strider are all excellent cardio-vascular exercises - they get your heart and lungs working.
You know how much exercise you can manage. As it gets easier, increase the tension on the machines and the length of exercise. Set goals and targets.

Pilates will be good for stretching.

Don't forget you can get excellent exercise by putting on your favourite music and dancing around (best when the house is empty!).

So, you want regular exercise but a variety. It seems to me you don't need a personal trainer. You can make your own plan and set your own targets.

Muscle building would be good. You can get books out of your library that give simple exercises using things around the home. That will be an excellent start.

Swimming too! That will get you moving in a different way.

You are doing brilliantly and should be very proud of yourself.

Don't forget that as you get fitter you will develop more muscle. Muscle weighs a lot more than fat, but takes up less room. It is important for your morale that you measure inches and keep a record. That will show your true progress - the scales aren't always the best record.

And horror of horrors - if you have a digital camera get naked and take photos. Now, today, from all angles. Be brave!!

Do the same every three months or so - you will be able to see the difference, I promise. :)

Losing 3 stones is awesome. I wish i had your dedication. I weighed in at 16.2 at christmas, got down to 15.7 by last week, but have gone back to 15.12 this morning. What's your secret?
Congrats Susan, that is brilliant. some good suggestions already - swimming is br illiant, so is walking, and later even a bit of running and cycling. Yoga is great too. I think variety is the spice of life and so just do some of everything. Keep up the fantastic work. low GL is the best way to lose weight and gain optimum health. I wish everyone would live this lifestyle, the world would be a much healthier happier place. Amara xx
Well done you!! I really enjoy my Aquafit classes. Lower impact then regular areobics. Good socially and nobody can see any wobbling!! Which suits me.
