This depends a lot on the individual dog. In older bitches the chances of a complication free birth are reduced, and they will often have less pups. I would say probably not over 6 as a general guideline, but I know of successful breedings of 7 year old english mastiffs. Older dogs tend to need more pain control and they also tend to bleed more in surgery if it has to be a c section. I have yet to meet a giant breed dog thats pressures didn't drop during the surgery. Your vet can give you a better idea in relation to your own dogs ability to breed safely.

Would not let a bitch have a first litter after the age of five, particlarly a giant breed like a newf. If she has had a litter before, then maybe six, but certainly not much older than that. The Kennel Club in the UK will not register a litter if the bitch has had her 8th birthday.
