Why Bother With A Mask

Today I had to visit my local hospital to collect some Gastrografin in advance of a procedure to be undertaken on Friday 13th. My wife dropped me off at the main entrance as I walked through with my smiley mask affixed. There was a large woman sitting at a small table with a tray of masks on it. She looked like she was a poppy seller. I used the hand cleanser on the wall of reception and carried on walking to the CTC suite. A voice boomed at me,'come back here and take a mask' I walked back and asked if she was talking to me.'Put this mask on and wear it in the hospital'. She then proffered it to me on the end of a pair of wooden tongs like I was a walking Covid Germ.I was sorely tempted to tell her to shove her inferior paper tissue mask where the sun don't shine.
I asked her what was wrong with my mask and she replied,'Nothing but we need to stop covid so you must wear this mask' I then asked her if I would get another mask on Friday or do I keep the one she had just given me as a souvenir. She said,' keep it if you like'.
If the NHS let some job's worth hand out inferior masks to visitors to the hospital and demand I replace my medical grade re-useable mask then why the hell do I bother wearing my mask in other public venues if it isn't deemed suitable. Obviously why no apparent improvement over the last 20 or so years no matter how much wasted money is thrown at it. No quibble if they have the Gestapo insisting a mask is worn but to hand out inferior ones to visitors who already comply by wearing their own seems stupid..

Really bob? Is there a big picture?

Anyway, you mentioned golf first didn't you? You should try golf anyway bob. Anything that goes wrong is entirely your own fault. Unlike a website like this where people blame others for daring to have their own opinion. Fore!!!
clarion, fore was the answer to a crossword clue and neither myself or my wife could make it fit....we both thought it was FOUR.
Yes, I got it today squad, It was the Fore Castle one.
Bob it was! it was!
Never been confused, squad, when someone mentioned a four play??
LOL.....LOL......never been confused by that bob.
bobbinwales,I never wasted my time,I am Retired and have all the time in the World, plus, there was nobody else behind me in the queue,so there you go,plenty more Supermarkets where I live.
//The difference is obvious to me.//

Well it's not to me. Face coverings, we are told, are to prevent possibly infected people spreading the virus. So, if a home made mask is good enough to wear in a restaurant or pub (when not eating/drinking, obviously), it's good enough in a supermarket or on a train or bus, why isn't one good enough when sitting waiting for a blood test in a hospital? Conversely, if a more robust mask is needed to protect people when mooching about in a hospital, why isn't one necessary when on a bus, in the freezer aisle in Tesco's or waiting your turn in the barber's?

If people need protecting, they need protecting. If a lump of damp rag is good enough in Tesco's it should be good enough in a hospital.
Your being obtuse (think thats the word).
A lump of damp rag wont do in that it wont help anyone but if someones sellfish and dumb enough to wear one they can, but if a supermarket wants to insist you wear theres it could do so just as this hospital does. The rules are there to help peopel not something to try to get round or winge pointlessly about
IMO a pointless gesture apart from making you feel in control tho if the supermarket never knew why you done it it, unsureme
Im sure youd allso complain if there were spotchecks by police/council officials outside restraunts, shops etc, judge, to check masks. We are advised to clean them and change them. If someone's not bothering to do that (wear clean ones) theres not much Tescos can do.

Precisely NJ. That was also part of the point I was making. It seemed some wished to know the signage, doubted my word and description but ignored what I also said. Why bother indeed?
I have been insulted by real professionals in my career and have no need to chill out or go back on the booze because of yesterday's experience with this obnoxious woman.
I am amazed that this thread has gone 100 plus as it was making two simple points that obviously some have difficulty grasping.
(a) If people are scared and feel the need to be uncivil then why come out at all if you are a volunteer. She was not front line and there was no indication of who she was. Any decent person would have introduced themselves and acquaint the visitor with the hospital policy and the reasons behind it.
(b) The reason you described in your Tesco dirty rag analogy. If my medical grade mask is not good enough in their hospital then why bother to wear a mask anywhere unless it is issued by the NHS everywhere I go. It's all or something.
Thats a silly argument. Just because people can choose wether to wear wear a dirty rag or a clean mask in Tesco dosn't mean they should have a free choice in hospital.
Your point (a) is not in dispute with me even though a can see its aimed at me. A said her attitude was wrong. SO was yours tho if your offended at having to put there mask on

If I was told to remove my mask by Mr Tesco and given an inferior mask by him to wear and I later tested positive for covid?............
I think Tesco would be laying them selves wide open for litigation. Who,in Tesco, is qualified to dictate which mask is suitable in their premises? Please Mr Tesco. I bought this mask in a pack of six from your store here only yesterday and now you tell me I can't wear it?
Silly argument again am afraid.. Some stores allready offer free masks. This hospital do's to. How on earth would anyone succesfuly sue Tesco or your hopsital if they got covid, could of been caught anywhere, and not due to the mask
Is it worth asking again?
Maybe not but anyway

//If masks are effective against Covid,
Then why do we still have Covid after months of wearing masks?//
Some might just plead poor hearing and march on to their appointment.

No mileage in that though.
Time for a break. I was sort of with you early on about the woman's manor but now your getting silly as you try to hard to make more out of it, your really making a mountain out of a molehill. Am going to leave you to it

Are you serious nailit. They help. A bit. Just like hospitals help treat it but peopel still die.
